Full Job Description

As a Board member, you will work alongside Executive and Non-executive Director colleagues to constructively challenge and support the development of strategies, scrutinise the performance of management and satisfy yourself that financial controls and systems for risk management are robust and effective. You will also work closely with the Council of Governors, which is responsible for ensuring the Non-Executive Directors are accountable for the Board of Directors' performance, Non-Executive Directors are responsible to the Council of Governors through the Chairman of the Board of Directors. As part of the unitary Board of Executive and Non-executive Directors they:

  • Constructively challenge the decisions of the Board and help develop proposals on strategy, ensuring effective governance and compliance and meeting performance targets required by NHSE, the Care Quality Commission and other statutory bodies.
  • Ensure that the Board acts in the best interests of service users, the community and wider public.
  • Work closely with the Council of Governors, which is responsible for ensuring the Non-Executive Directors are accountable for the Board of Directors' performance
  • As members of the Board of the Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, all Directors are required to:
  • Provide compassionate leadership within a framework of prudent and effective controls which enable risk to be assessed and managed;
  • Set strategic aims, ensuring that the necessary financial and human resources are in place to meet objectives, and review management's performance;
  • Set values and standards and ensure that the Trust's obligations to its Service Users and others are understood and met;
  • Ensure that the Trust promotes equality and recognises diversity in its dealings with patients, staff and other stakeholders;
  • Focus on ensuring effective compliance of clinical, corporate, legal and financial elements of the organisation.

Also essential is relevant senior leadership experience in the private, public, or voluntary sector and a good understanding of the workings of the NHS. In considering the balance of skills, experience and knowledge across the Trust Board we are interested in hearing from applicants who have a senior leadership/background in the areas of IT, digital and technology, We would also welcome applicants with backgrounds in one or more of the following areas:
