Full Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a supportive, forward thinking and innovative multi-disciplinary team including medical staff, Surgical Care Practitioners, Physician Associates and clinical Nurse Specialists who are committed to providing the highest standard of patient care within the Hepatobiliary (HPB) teams at the Freeman Hospital., This is a new role within the department and is likely to develop in the future. Successful candidates would be expected to adapt to the needs of the trust and HPB departments to continue to provide the very best care possible for regional patients., The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust define a nurse practitioner as a qualified nurse where the primary purpose of role is to perform a specific technological procedure/s e.g. endoscopy, ultrasound in a defined patient group and/or advanced patient assessment and clinical decision making in a broad patient group e.g complex HPB patients
To deliver a quality of service matching clinical need to available resources within the focus of specialist nursing practice:
+ To ensure that the patient is the central focus of a streamlined patient journey ensuring optimal quality of care
+ Working as a nurse practitioner, provide a prompt response to calls from colleagues, prioritising importance and clinical need
+ Manage own caseload to include assessment, investigation, diagnosis and treatment within defined parameters and training
+ Provide immediate care management of patient including communication of plan to patients and significant others
+ Review and refer to appropriate person, e.g. AHP, resident medical staff, specialist registrar or critical care outreach team
+ Liaising with Patient Services Coordinator where necessary
+ Communicate within multidisciplinary team, ward/departmental staff and/or out of hours team
+ Provide specialist education and training to departmental nursing staff, nursing and medical students
+ To provide support to the HPB team, rounds, clinics including rapid access clinics
+ To work alongside allied health professionals as a team. E.g - Physician associates, Surgical scrub practitioners
Physician Associate
+ The post holder will work under the supervision of the Medical Team and will be supported in developing those skills necessary to perform their role in providing high quality, patient centred service to patients attending the breast unit
+ The role will largely be based within Endoscopy Services initially undergoing training in endoscopic procedures. Ultimately to a point where the post holder will deliver their own diagnostic endoscopy caseload once training complete (in line with national guidance on endoscopy training)
+ The post holder will work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team in the endoscopy units including nurse practitioners and within the policies and procedures of the unit and NUTH
+ The post holder will build on their skills in clerking, assessing and examining patients gained through their physician associate training, develop skills in lesion recognition in the gastrointestinal tract, interpretation and recommend appropriate managements/treatments (as governed by national guidelines). They
will be expected to liaise with other professionals and specialities as required and complete necessary documentation relating to their patients
+ It is expected that the Physician Associate will become involved in the activities of the Department including coordinating patients on treatment pathways, including 2WW cancer pathways, reviewing patients and providing subsequent management of cases in conjunction with the Clinical team. Physician Associates
may represent the department at local meetings as appropriate.
+ Physicians Associates will be expected to contribute to the unit's educational activities and instruct and educate patients in preventative healthcare
+ Physician Associates will be expected to contribute to the unit's governance system including the Endoscopy User Group meetings
+ Fully document all aspects of patient care and complete all required paperwork for legal and administrative purposes
Nurse Practitioner (Trainee)
The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust define a nurse practitioner as a qualified nurse where the primary purpose of role is to perform a specific technological procedure/s e.g. endoscopy, ultrasound in a defined patient group and/or advanced patient assessment and clinical decision making in a
broad patient group.
+ To work towards the role of an independent nurse practitioner, contributing towards the delivery of a quality service matching clinical need to available resources within the focus of specialist nursing practice:
+ To ensure that the patient is the central focus of a streamlined patient journey ensuring optimal quality of care
+ Will provide a prompt response to calls from colleagues, prioritising importance and clinical need
+ Supports the clinical team to manage a defined caseload, activity to include assessment, investigation, diagnosis and treatment within defined protocols and training
+ Provide immediate care management of patient including communication of plan to patients and significant others
+ Review and refer to appropriate person, e.g. AHP, resident medical staff, specialist registrar or critical care outreach team
+ Liaises with Patient Services Coordinator. o Communicate within multidisciplinary team, ward/departmental staff and/or out of hour's team
+ Contributes to specialist education and training to ward departmental staff, nursing and medical students

We have a full time post for Band 7 Nurse Practitioner/Physician Associate within the HPB team.
