Full Job Description

Specialist Nurse within the Northern Neonatal Transport Service are accountable for assessing, planning, delivering & evaluating high quality patient care on the neonatal unit & during the transfer process. This includes;

  • Administering IV Fluids & medication.
  • Providing effective support to parents throughout the care pathway.
  • Acting as role model & be involved with the transport team in order to support the training & induction of new team members to ensure they become a fully competent transport nurse.
  • Working with professionals from other NHS trusts in the co-ordination of the safe transfer of sick & preterm infants.
  • Engaging in the development of the Transport Service throughout the Northern Neonatal Network.
  • Communicating effectively with other professionals utilising all available mediums e.g. spoken word, written documentation & call conferencing etc.
  • Being flexible in the recognition that transport working patterns can occasionally be unpredictable
  • The Northern Neonatal Transport Service (NNeTS) is a stand-alone team co-located on NICU at the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI), Newcastle upon Tyne.

  • 34 hours 30 minutes/week (3 X 11.5 hour shifts / week).

    We are delighted to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, enthusiastic & ambitious individual with significant neonatal intensive care skills, experience & QIS to train as a Specialist Nurse within the Northern Neonatal Transport Service.
  • Successful candidates must have experience in caring for sick babies who may require ventilatory support, nitric oxide therapy & therapeutic hypothermia. Candidates will also join & make a significant contribution to a well-integrated team providing tertiary neonatal care. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop areas of interest & expertise. In addition to the challenges of the role, you will be expected to be involved in teaching & educating junior staff, as well as being involved in research & audit.

    The Newcastle Neonatal Service is a busy, vibrant & expanding service that offers a variety of experiences in Neonatal Care including Surgery, Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery. NNeTS operates 24/7 retrieving & repatriating infants within the Northern Region & beyond. Staff work on a rota that includes nights, weekends & bank holidays. There are approximately 400 acute transfers a year & 400 nurse-led repatriation transfers a year. There is a comprehensive training package & opportunities to attend conferences & study days., Our staff oversee over 2 million patients 'contacts' each year, delivering high standards of healthcare from the following sites
