Full Job Description

Surgical and Associated Specialties have two full time Band 6 Clinical Nurse Specialist posts within the Northern Oesophagogastric unit. The department is a patient-focused department committed to providing holistic care for individuals with oesophagogastric conditions. We are seeking to appoint two outstanding and highly motivated Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS) to join our multidisciplinary team. These positions offer an exciting opportunity to contribute to the care of patients and to be an integral part of a leading specialist unit.

+ Act as a key worker for patients, coordinating care and acting as a liaison between the multidisciplinary team, patients, and their families.
+ Develop and implement individualised care plans, ensuring holistic and patient-centred care.
+ Conduct clinical assessments, patient history reviews, to inform treatment decisions and monitor progress.
+ Provide pre-operative and post-operative care and education, including wound care, pain management, and discharge planning.
+ Support patients undergoing chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and other treatments, providing education and symptom management.
+ Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, case reviews, and clinical audits to ensure high standards of care.
+ Contribute to the development and implementation of clinical guidelines and protocols for oesophagogastric care.
+ Provide education and training to nursing staff, junior doctors, and other healthcare professionals on oesophagogastric care.
+ Engage in research and clinical trials, contributing to the unit's evidence-based practice.
+ Support the unit's outreach activities, including patient education events and community engagement.
+ Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, ensuring compliance with all relevant guidelines and regulations.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust define a nurse specialist as a qualified nurse where the primary purpose of role is to provide guidance and support based on advanced level knowledge to patients, carers and health professionals concerning a specific disease/condition.
Within the sphere of specialist practice:
+ Is working towards advanced knowledge and skills within specialist sphere of practice.
+ Contributes to the facilitation of the planning, delivery and evaluation of care pathways for a designated group of patients.
+ Support the development of nursing practice within the specialist field and contribute to the body of nursing knowledge.
+ Contributes to training and education within specialist area.
