Full Job Description

MAIN PURPOSE
To support the Early Years Teacher in the running of the Early Years department.
To act as a key worker for particular groups of children as assigned by the Early Years Teacher.
Complement the professional work of teachers by taking responsibility for learning activities under an agreed system of supervision. This will involve planning, preparing and delivering learning activities suitable for Early Years age children as individuals or groups of children. Observing the learning/play progress of children and assessing, recording and reporting on their achievement and development, including meetings with parents.

SUPPORT FOR TEACHERS

  • Support children's access to learning and play using appropriate strategies, resources etc.

  • Work with other staff in preparing, planning, evaluating and adjusting learning and play activities as appropriate

  • Monitor and evaluate children's responses and progress against action plans through observation and planned recording.

  • Provide objective and accurate feedback and reports on children's achievement and progress ensuring the availability of appropriate evidence.

  • Work with other staff in the development and implementation of appropriate behaviour management strategies following the EYFS behaviour policy.

  • Establish constructive relationships with parents/carers, exchanging information, facilitating their support for their child's attendance, access and learning and supporting home to school and community links.

  • Hold meetings with parents of key worker group children to report on progress and development of children.

  • Maintain an enabling environment, contributing to displays when asked and ensuring that the environment is always engaging.

  • SUPPORT FOR THE CURRICULUM
  • Implement agreed learning and play activities/teaching programmes, adjusting activities according to the children's responses/needs.

  • Comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security, equalities, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person.

  • Be aware of and support differences and ensure all children have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop.

  • Contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the school.

  • Attend and participate in regular planning meetings.

  • Participate in training and other learning activities as required.

  • Recognise own strengths and areas of expertise and use these to advise and support others.

    Level 2 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools or in Childcare

  • English and maths at GCSE level or equivalent


  • Desirable requirements:
  • Level 3 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools or in Childcare

  • First Aid training


  • Specific experience needed for the role
    Essential requirements:
  • Experience of working in nurseries or schools

  • Experience of effectively managing pupil behaviour

  • Experience of working with children with special educational needs


  • Desirable requirements:
  • Experience of delivering specific intervention programmes to support children with speech and language or with learning to read

  • Experience of supporting parents


  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    Essential requirements:
  • Knowledge of safeguarding

  • Knowledge of how to teach phonics as the first step in reading


  • Desirable requirements:
  • Understanding of how to support children with autism in school, Able to work as part of a team

  • Resilience and the ability work under pressure and use initiative to support children

  • Ability to work creatively and collaboratively

  • Excellent attendance and punctuality

  • Enthusiasm and empathy for children

  • A commitment to professional standards

  • Ability to demonstrate, understand and apply the school and Trust values
