Full Job Description

Coombe Wood provides specialist perinatal inpatient and community services for mothers and their babies and has done so for over 50 years. The team is made up of psychiatrists, nurses, nursery nurses, psychologists, occupational therapists, art psychotherapist, family therapist, specialist midwife, specialist health visitor and support staff. We accept women in the third trimester of their pregnancy and mother with babies up to 12 months old. The post holder will work in the mother and baby unit and with opportunities in the future to work across the community perinatal teams. The ideal candidates will be a qualified nursery who has experience of working with children under 1 and their parents. The post holder should have a passion to deliver excellent child centred care and a desire to develop their skills in this specialist service. They will be able to demonstrate good interpersonal, communication, and organisational skills. A commitment to working within a multi-professional team is essential to the role. There are excellent opportunities and support available for you to develop both personally and professionally. Training on all aspects of maternal mental health, parent infant interaction, baby care & development is provided on site and through various specialist perinatal mental health organisations. Hence experience in perinatal mental health is not a prerequisite but a strong interest and motivation to learn on the job is required. Band 4 nursery nurses work closely with the people who use our services, their families, friends and carers and play an important contribution in how people experience our services. Band 4 nursery nurses are expected to be kind and responsive but professional and informative and contribute to the quality of the services we provide by:

  • keeping the people who using our services as safe as possible through the use of sound nursery nurse assessment skills
  • ensuring the best possible outcomes by using up-to-date skills and adhering to evidence-based policies and procedures
  • ensuring the people using our services have a good experience by respecting, empowering and working in partnership with people throughout the care planning process
  • We believe that the best health care is delivered by multi-disciplinary teams working well together and in partnership with other teams and services to provide seamless care. Band 4 nursery nurses work as part of a team and you will contribute to the success of the team by drawing support from more experienced nurses and other health professionals but also by supervising other staff and student nurses to ensure they are working to the standards which the people using our services deserve. The successful applicant may have contact with patients or service users.   • To work in partnership with team members, providing support and assistance in all areas of care on the Mother and Baby Unit as necessary
  • Act as a positive role model to staff.
  • Ensure an assessment of the baby is conducted and documented on admission and ensure regular monitoring of physical health and developmental milestones are undertaken by staff.
  • Ensure that patients' involvement is fully promoted and that they are consulted about the care being given to their baby.
  • Communicate sensitive information to patients and/or relatives/carers concerning appropriate physical and/or psychological conditions., Effectively co-ordinate baby/infant care as necessary on a shift to shift basis and take responsibility for ensuring information is handed onto the clinical shift leader.
  • Organise own time and that of junior staff and students.
  • Ensure necessary orders of stocks and provisions specific to infants are put through on time and that systems are in place to capture any materials that mothers are responsible for repaying/replacing
  • Ensure identified follow-up regarding baby care as decided in clinical reviews are completed and information available in a timely manner
  • 3.5 Physical Skills:
  • Supervise and maintain the safe custody, control and administration of drugs and take appropriate action/measures to provide safe administration as prescribed to baby/infants.
  • Use a range of therapeutic techniques when managing patients with challenging and unpredictable needs including when this leads to aggressive incidents.
  • Assist and/or supervise mothers with bathing, dressing, and feeding, changing and other aspects of baby care.
  • Escort babies, with or without mothers, to other departments in the hospital and to other hospitals, if required.
  • 3.6 Responsibility for baby/infant care:
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate the clinical care of babies/infants on the unit.
  • Promote the importance of each child's background and varied cultural needs.
  • Take an active part in team discussion and decisions relating to the mother and baby dyad in respect of the care and treatment and ensure these are carried out or reviewed as required.
  • To ensure that assessments and care plans reflect the psychological, emotional, social care, treatment/intervention, risk management and physical healthcare of the infants on the unit.
  • To provide a nursery nursing perspective and representation in multidisciplinary team reviews and care planning meetings.
  • 3.7 Supporting yourself and others Engaged staff are more productive and Nursery Nurses can ensure they are engaged in the Trust and the work we all do by:
  • Participating in supervision and annual appraisals which will help you to reflect on your work, understand your objectives and monitor your progress towards achieving them
  • Using continuing professional development funds to consolidate, update or improve clinical skills

    To have a good awareness of children's individual needs and a good understanding of childcare issues and child development when caring for infants under 1 year of age and use this to teach and guide colleagues
  • To ensure all staff in clinical groups, through supervision, take responsibility for attending all statutory and mandatory training
  • Have the ability to identify and address training needs on unit to enhance practice, quality of care and treatment outcomes
  • Demonstrate a good knowledge base on safeguarding children issues and be able to share this within the team to ensure best possible outcome for infants
  • 3.3 Analytical and Judgemental Skills:
  • Use clinical judgement on problems requiring investigation and analysis regarding an infants well being
  • Being able to initiate referrals onto appropriate specialist services as indicated by the well being needs of the infant
  • Assess and manage risk associated with the working environment ensuring appropriate Trust policies and procedures are followed accordingly.
  • To update knowledge and skills in line with NNEB or equivalent
  • Comply with legal requirements relating to the care of babies in a mental health setting- Safeguarding Children Procedures, Disability Confident
