Full Job Description
A key operational arm of HSE, Energy Division (ED) regulates the UKs Offshore Oil and Gas Industry, pipelines, mines, diving, and renewables sector. We employ around 140 professional engineers and scientists to do this.
Respected internationally for our independent status and integrity, we have a long-standing reputation for technical expertise which can be applied logically to deliver effective, proportionate solutions enabling hazardous activities to be managed safely.
As a process engineering inspector, you will be involved with regulating offshore oil and gas operations and related activities with a particular focus on addressing the potential major accident hazards in relation to the process plant. In this frontline role, you can influence not only individual organisations but the sector as a whole.
Please note that due to the nature and volume of the work and travel, this role is only suitable for full time working., + Assessment of safety cases drawing conclusions on the adequacy of the demonstration, raising issues, or considering future inspection work.
+ Investigations of incidents (including hydrocarbon releases) or complaints as part of a multi-discipline team dealing with enforcement or supporting others as necessary on technical aspects.
+ Inspections (on/offshore) as part of a multi-discipline team, completing reports and issuing different levels of enforcement depending on the risk present.
+ Preparation of technical reports / expert evidence for various levels of legal proceedings.
+ Provision of expert advice on health and safety matters associated with Process Engineering / Process Safety within Energy Division, HSE, industry and other relevant stakeholders.
+ Make technical contributions to the development of industry standards and guidance.
+ Participate in industry working groups and wider sector engagement.
Training & Support
From day one, you will be supported by your manager, team and wider colleagues to understand and develop in your role in HSE. We support your continuing professional development directly through training and through stakeholder support and steering.
For the legal requirements of the role, you will be enrolled on a legal assessment /Specialist Training Programme during which you will be given time to study for and are required to successfully complete.
Travel
In role, you will spend on average 2-3 night stays offshore (subject to weather) approximately 6-8 times a year for proactive inspection or reactive investigation work, potentially at short notice, all within a small multi-discipline team.
Medical Requirements
You must be able to satisfy the OEUK approved offshore medical & OPITO approved survival training requirements. (BOSIET/MIST)., Member of Institute of Chemical Engineers and hold Chartered Engineer (CEng) status., At interview, you will be assessed on your technical skills, your experience and the behaviours detailed within the advert.
You will be asked to deliver a five-minute verbal presentation for the interview panel. Further information for the presentation will be provided if successful at sift stage.
Interviews will take place week commencing 10th, 17th or 24th of February 2025. The interviews will be held in-person at our Aberdeen office, however, online interviews via Microsoft Teams can be arranged in exceptional circumstances.

+ A breadth of practical experience and knowledge [equivalent to the role of Process Technical Authority] which has been gained whilst working in an operational role in an offshore oil and gas production environment or other equivalent high-hazard industry. This should include an understanding of:
- Relevant engineering codes, standards, and industry guidance.
- Plant and process design including understanding of the hierarchy of control.
- Safe operation of plant including maintenance activities.
- Hazard identification and assessment techniques including HAZOP, LOPA etc.
- Risk assessment and risk management tools.
- Process safety management and associated frameworks.
+ The ability to think strategically, identify underlying core issues, and engage at different levels both with colleagues, site technical staff and at the most senior levels within an organisation.
+ That they are self-motivated, able to work independently to contribute to a busy and supportive team, work flexibly, with frequent offshore travel and can deliver priorities against very challenging deadlines.
