Work Location: Cowes Fire Station
Hours per week: Minimum of 90 on-call hours per week
Contract Type: Permanent
The Role:
An on-call firefighter is a paid person employed by the fire and rescue service who is 'on call' to respond to a range of emergencies and to engage with their community. They have everyday lives and jobs, until their pager sounds - then they become professional firefighters.
The work may be called 'part-time', but on-call firefighters are trained and experienced people on the front line, saving lives and protecting people and community assets. On-call firefighters are paid for their services, they receive thorough training and learn all they need to know about emergency situations as well as additional personal skills.
On-call firefighters come from all areas of the community. For example, they could be men and women who are at home, in full or part-time employment, working for themselves, studying at college or university, or not currently employed. They are exceptional people who give their time to assist the fire and rescue service and help protect their communities.
There is no doubt it is a demanding role, but in return offers the chance to make a real contribution. You will form close working relationships with the other members of the team, essential when dealing with an emergency, and further enhanced by other aspects of the role such as attending community events.
On-call firefighters do not just fight fires, they are involved in a wide variety of situations ranging from community fire safety, flooding, co-responding, road accidents and chemical spills to retrieving animals from awkward situations.
Previous experience
You don't need previous experience as we provide a comprehensive training programme. What is important is that you are enthusiastic and can meet certain essential requirements. Crucially, you must be able to reach the fire station quickly and safely after being alerted to an incident. This can be physically demanding and therefore physical fitness is of utmost importance.
Please note: To be eligible you must work and/or live within 5 minutes to the Fire Station, if you do not meet this criteria your application will be automatically rejected.
