Full Job Description

As the Operations Improvement Manager you will be responsible for the management and implementation of operational programmes aimed at improving our lifesaving effectiveness and managing high risk activities. Sitting within the Lifesaving Standards team, you will bring together subject matter experts, both staff and volunteer, from across the organisation. You will be responsible for the management and delivery of a programme of work focussed initially on: 1. Reviewing the RNLI Towing and Marine Salvage Policy and supporting guidance, to better support operational crews in command and decision making. 2. Work with operations managers and human factors specialists to enhance the suite of operational check cards and ensure they are fit for purpose. 3. Delivery of a communications and engagement programme / road show to ensure changes to policy, guidance and supporting tools are understood by those that use them. 4. Develop Operational Requirements for equipment improvements to support towing activities, primarily focusing on the inshore fleet. 5. Identifying and scoping further work programmes to address areas of high-risk operational activity. This role will bring together stakeholders from Lifesaving Operations, Engineering and Supply, Safety and Learning & Organisational Development to deliver a programme of change, with a real opportunity to improve operational effectiveness whilst ensuring safety of our crews.

The successful candidate will have substantial operational command experience, leading and supporting maritime search and rescue operations. You will also have a detailed understanding of all RNLI assets, operational procedures, and supporting guidance and policy. You will:

  • Have exceptional engagement skills,
  • Be able to communicate effectively with both staff and volunteers,
  • Work across departmental structures at all levels.
  • Need to drive collaboration and be a champion for change.
  • You will be innovative and able to challenge 'the way we've always done it'. Be prepared to generate new tools, process and procedures, and have an appreciation of the importance of human factors in the operational environment.
