Full Job Description

The Location team is responsible for resourcing and supporting outside broadcasts for Radio and News, and for Production Services who supply and support kit to self-shooters. Our team work on some of the BBCs highest profile events ranging from music (Glastonbury, the Proms), to Sport (Euros, Olympics) to News (coverage of the Party Conferences, elections as well as breaking News events).,

  • As part of the management team, responsible for the strategic development of services, skills and solutions.
  • Responsible for the line management, training, performance, development and discipline of staff. (13 team members currently)
  • Deliver effective service provision, ensuring a seamless delivery of operational staff and facilities, liaising closely with production, technology and other operational stakeholders, obtaining regular feedback on performance levels and seeking to consistently improve the quality of the service.
  • Maintain and develop operational standards and working practices within the team, initiating and developing comprehensive training programmes for staff, to ensure that they have the skills and proficiencies required to undertake their role effectively.
  • Maintain and develop good industrial relations. To participate in management/union meetings and to be involved in consultation and negotiations with the unions
  • Ensure that the provisions of the Health and Safety at Work Act, Working Time Directive and other workplace related legislation are observed; responsible for ensuring that risk assessments are completed, appropriate and meet BBC standards; responsible for ensuring appropriate method statements are reviewed and fit for purpose.
  • Responsible for ensuring staff have their training and development needs assessed on a regular basis and that action takes place to provide them with the skills and training required to undertake their role effectively.
  • Contribute to the development of the training plan to ensure that the training remains focused to the business need.
  • Provide advice on staff, technology and working practices within the department to production areas and to assist in meeting short and long-term objectives.
  • Contribute to the management and operation of effective scheduling, budgetary control and cost recovery business processes and systems for the department ensuring all business targets are met.
  • Play an active role in assisting departmental head and other managers with the business plan for the team, and to be accountable for ensuring that revenue expenditure within the department is contained within the limits set out.

    The successful candidate with demonstrate leadership qualities that align with BBC values and Behaviours. You will enjoy working with a range of multi-disciplined colleagues and stake-holders in the busy area of BBC Operations. Additionally, you will demonstrate excellent communication, planning and organisation skills.
  • Essential skills:
  • Experience gained in at senior level in an operations environment, ideally media/broadcasting or similar
  • A working understanding of production and logistical processes in location work
  • Excellent inter-personal skills and an ability to deal with people at all levels inside and outside the BBC
  • Demonstrable potential or experience in managing teams
  • Ability to assimilate information rapidly and problem solve to a deadline
  • Thorough awareness of BBC output and the ability to look ahead independently
  • Excellent IT skills.
  • Advantageous:
  • Good knowledge of employment and industrial relations legislation, policies and processes.
