A new exciting opportunity has arisen for an ambitious and enthusiastic individual who wants to lead a team of ophthalmic technicians and enhance the knowledge and skills in the Medical Retina Diagnostic Hub at a world leading eye hospital.

We are recruiting an Ophthalmic Technician -Team Leader to join the Medical Retina Service at City Road, Moorfields Eye Hospital.

The post holder will be required to work effectively with members of the multidisciplinary team providing leadership to the technicians working in the Medical Retina Diagnostic Hub. You will also have a responsible to line manage a group of ophthalmic technicians.

As a team leader you will be expected to assist in education and training of the junior staff. You should be able to teach and confidently perform visual acuities, intraocular pressure testing and all retinal fundus imaging, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), OCT wide-field/anterior segment imaging, OCT-Angiography, visual fields testing and any other tests deemed necessary., Support the Senior Ophthalmic Technician to line manage a group of ophthalmic technicians, managing their sickness and absence, annual leave and ensuring annual appraisals and Personal Development Plans are in place for each member of staff.

The candidate will be based in Diagnostic Hub and will be lead and supervise all staff allocated to work in the Hub.

At all times treat patients with dignity and respect, exercising discretion and maintaining their confidentiality.

Carry out a range of diagnostic tests and be technically adept with equipment relevant to the ophthalmic speciality including Visual Fields, HRT, Optical Coherence Tomography, Optivue, Pentacam. Ultrasound B scans and other ophthalmic diagnostic equipment such as fundus camera.

Give clear and concise explanations and test instructions to ensure maximum patient understanding and co-operation takes place, taking into account patients who have visual impairment hearing loss physical disabilities, learning difficulties and non-English speaking patients.

Ensure all test activity and outpatient procedures are recorded accurately and assist with the submission to the coding team on a regular basis.

Be fully competent in the use of MEH PAS, Open Eyes and computer programmes required for specialist technical equipment.

Working with the guidance of the senior nursing team lead on the training and development of new staff.

Participate in the training and development of all technical staff within the department, including assessing NVQ level 3 competencies.

Carry out visual acuity testing for patients in accordance with Trust policy and national guidelines.

Communicate with patients in difficult situations showing understanding, respect and empathy.

Provide reassurance, advice and comfort to all patients, many who have complex emotional, psychological problems and demonstrate an understanding of when to escalate the care of these patient to more senior staff.

Respond appropriately following departmental guidance to any medical emergencies.

Work with the Clinical Technical Services team to ensure all equipment maintenance, equipment safety and data archiving are performed as required and achieve the required standards.

Participate in teaching and training sessions in the department for all staff groups.

Participate and support on-going development of technicians with the Practice development team.
