Full Job Description

As a staff nurse in parkside outpatients you will be expected to lead in the day to day running of our clinics and ensure they run smoothly for both patients and consultants. You will be responsible for supporting our consultants with clinical procedures and undertaking nurse led clinics. Supporting patients and consultants during private outpatient clinics Collecting and testing urine. Uroflows Collection of Specimens for laboratory and department examinations when requested. Urine and faecal samples as required, Collection of swabs for culture and sensitivity Collection of venous blood. Blood glucose monitoring . Recording and reporting patients' physical measurements as directed by the consultant e.g. pulse, temperature, respiration rate, blood pressure, ECG, peak flow, escalation of NEWS and others specific to the area concerned. Prepare and maintain environments for clinical procedures. Prepare and support patients for clinical procedures. Undertake specific nursing skills on Parkside as per competency sheets Preparing and assisting with sterile procedures where directed. Changing dressings Removing sutures/clips TWOC clinics Assisting with cystoscopy clinics Assisting with colposcopy and hysteroscopy clinics Parkside outpatients is a positive; dynamic and busy area to work. We cover all aspects of private practice and hold many procedure lists as well as consultation clinics. As an integral member of the Outpatients department you will be expected to manage a variety of clinics efficiently to ensure patient and consultant experience is of the highest standard. To work in other areas of private patients as required by Senior Sister or Matron. GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To open up and prepare the department for the day.
  • To ensure the department is clean, tidy and well presented.
  • To ensure all clinic rooms are set up in accordance with the consultants requirements for their clinics.
  • To ensure rooms are adequately stocked and stock is rotated as to minimise wasteage.
  • You will be required to act as a chaperone for patients for a variety of reasons and ensure their privacy and dignity is upheld at all times.
  • As part of the day to day running of clinics you will be required to perform basic clinical examinations (including but not limited to obtaining baseline observations, venepuncture and urine tests).
  • To ensure that all patients, visitors and staff are treated in a courteous, professional and caring manner and receive prompt assistance when required.
  • To promote equality for all individuals, taking into consideration their cultural and religious beliefs, customs and values.
  • To promote patient independence and maintain the individual's dignity at all times.
  • To adhere to hospital policy in relation to patient confidentiality at all times.
  • To be aware of their responsibilities under the 1974 Health and Safety at Work Act. Care should be taken in all aspects of work to ensure that these and other safety regulations, e.g. C.O.S.H.H. and Manual Handling Policy are adhered to.
  • To report any accidents and/or incidents occurring to patients, visitors, staff or oneself according to hospital policy.
  • To report any suspicious circumstances/individuals/packages immediately to Unit Manager or her deputy.
  • To be aware of procedures to be followed in the case of Fire, Cardiac Arrest and any other emergencies.
  • To be aware that the Post-holder should not become involved in any financial matters with, or on behalf of a patient or relative, e.g. witnessing a Will, receipt of gifts etc. and to adhere to hospital policy on this issue.
  • As an important member of the team, the post holder should attend and participate in any meetings and training sessions as required.
  • To be aware of own levels of competence and at no time attempt tasks above and beyond their ability or training.
  • KEY TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Assist in the efficient running of outpatient clinics: Managing clinic lists and keeping the consultant up to date with their patient load 1. Obtaining any observations/tests prior to seeing consultant as required 2. Assisting with minor procedures 3. Acting as a chaperone for patients as requested 4. Setting up clinics in advance of the consultant starting their list to ensure clinics start on time 5. Taking clinic bookings in accordance to available space and staffing levels to maximise efficiency of the department. 1. Receive, transmit, store and receive information relating to the delivery of a Care service by: 1. Taking clinic bookings as requested. 2. Ensuring that all relevant paperwork is ready prior to the start of clinic. 3. Utilising the PAS [or equivalent] system as appropriate. 4. Answering the department telephone and record/deliver messages accurately. 5. Providing clerical support where required. 1. Ensure that department stores/stock supply is maintained by: 1. Assisting with the ordering of supplies and recording the receipt of stock 2. Monitoring the efficient storage of supplies and the maintenance of appropriate stock levels. 3. Stock rotation 1. Contribute to the health, safety and security of patients and their environment by: 1. Ensuring the tidiness and cleanliness of the entire department and equipment. 2. Cleaning and re-prepping couches/treatment areas after use in consultation/treatment rooms. 3. Dealing with the disposal of soiled linen and refuse as per hospital policy. 4. Following hospital policies with regard to the control of infection. 5. Monitoring and checking all department equipment and ensuring that the appropriate requisition for any repairs [to Estates Office] are completed, and that the team leader is informed. 6. Providing for the health safety and wellbeing of the patient/client during escort duties; such as transferring from one area to another; or when undertaking a messenger service to other parts of the Trust.
