Full Job Description

The Children's Diabetes Service looks after all children and young people (CYP) with diabetes in Oxfordshire and surrounding areas, currently around 370 up to the age of 18 years. The team is based at the Oxford Children's Hospital, John Radcliffe site, with clinics both in Oxford and at the Horton Hospital, Banbury. Approximately 72% of the children/young people with Type 1 diabetes use insulin pumps and 83% of all CYP use continuous glucose monitoring. The multi-disciplinary team works tirelessly to improve the quality of life of children and young people with diabetes, while optimising the best possible individual management of the condition. The post holder will exercise advanced clinical expertise, levels of judgement, discretion and decision making in clinical care for a named caseload of children and young people (CYP) with diabetes. There will be additional areas of responsibility within the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) to provide expert compassionate care and education for CYP and their families. This will include line manager responsibilities. The post holder will be a key contributor to the on-going development of diabetes services in line with the Best Practice Tariff, the local and national networks, government and Trust initiatives. This includes research/audit contributions., · Provide a clinical lead and role model to the nursing team by delivering high quality care as an expert practitioner, maintaining confidentiality at all times. · Have overall nursing responsibility for a defined diabetes specialist caseload, responsible for the assessment of care needs, development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care/education for children/young adults (CYP) and their families with diabetes · Participate in nurse led paediatric diabetes activities and be responsible for leading in key areas as defined by the Lead Diabetes Nurse, eg, a)Transition, b) Ward nurse training, student nurse training, other health groups 3) rarer types of diabetes, such as CFD, Type 2, MODY, steroid induced 4) Technology group lead · Support the Core Management Team in implementing and maintaining the standards of care as set out in National Standards · Contribute to the research agenda: identify, recommend or support relevant areas for research within diabetes nursing that may benefit patient care. To ensure research findings are used appropriately, to enhance direct patient care.

  • Maintain and develop personal theoretical knowledge and high standards of clinical competence and professional development through ongoing self-education.
  • Develop and maintain a peer network of support, information and learning with other nurse specialists at a local and National level, via the National Diabetes Network., The post holder will exercise advanced clinical expertise, levels of judgement, discretion and decision making in clinical care for a named caseload of children and young people (CYP) with diabetes.   • Obtained (eg Warwick, Birmingham modules), Non-medical Prescribers course or working towards it, At least 3 years in the field, Evidence of working on diabetes guidelines
