Full Job Description
Are you an experienced, motivated and enthusiastic children's emergency nurse? If so then we would love to meet you. We are looking for someone who will bring a positive attitude to the Trust and can demonstrate a kind and compassionate attitude.
We will support you in developing your clinical skills and competencies with the support of our paediatric senior nurses in the form of APLS, HDU and leadership courses.

We are committed to ensuring quality patient care whilst achieving the national emergency department care quality indicators and targets., + Responsible (with some supervision) for the assessment of care needs and the subsequent development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care for children attending the Emergency Department.
+ To deliver evidence based care to children/young people and their families within the department to agreed standards and within a family centred care approach.
+ To take charge of the dedicated paediatric area during a shift and in the absence of a more senior paediatric nurse.
+ To communicate effectively with all members of the multidisciplinary team, have an active role in supervising, supporting and teaching junior member of staff.

+ Assess children on arrival in the treatment area and prioritise need for clinical intervention. Plan, implement and evaluate care regimes for individual children providing quick and effective flow through the department.
+ Supervise junior staff and students in all aspects of care, ensuring they have the knowledge, skills and resources to carry out care delegated to them.
+ Maintain effective communication with nursing, ancillary, medical and paramedical colleagues.
+ To ensure the safe administration of medicines in accordance with local policy and NMC guidelines, including Patient Group Directions.
+ To ensure high standards of patient care at all times and to assist in monitoring and maintaining quality care initiatives.
+ To maintain the privacy and dignity of children/young people throughout their time in the Emergency Department.
+ To develop an area of clinical interest and provide nursing expertise to improve the care & services offered to children and their families.
+ Ensure an appropriate, welcoming and safe environment is provided for children and their families. As much as possible, this should be audio-visually separate from adults and in line with National Service Framework recommendations
+ To develop and keep clinical knowledge and skills updated, including developing and maintaining extended clinical role skills, following appropriate training.
+ Maintain safe and effective discharge procedures, liaising with other relevant healthcare/support professionals including primary care staff according to the individual child's needs.
+ Provide support for children/young people and their families. Direct them to relevant services if appropriate.
+ Assist in the identification of any child protection issues and make referrals to appropriate multidisciplinary team members including social services.
Managerial Responsibilities
+ Organise his/her own work and assist junior staff in managing their workload.
+ Act as an effective role model, mentor and preceptor to junior staff and students.
+ Ensure that nursing procedures and policies are followed. Ensure prescribed medical treatments are carried out, reporting any changes in a child's clinical condition.
+ Regularly take charge of a group of children.
+ Inform the Shift leader / Lead Nurse of any activity in the department which affects patient care and department flow.
+ Maintain an awareness of clinical and professional developments in nursing and contribute to and participate in audits, clinical risk and quality initiatives
+ Participate in the development and implementation of new initiatives and contribute to the development of nursing practice within the department.
+ Report accidents/incidents and complaints to the paediatric lead nurse or in his/her absence, the shift leader. Complete relevant documentation.
+ Actively assist in the investigation of complaints if required.
+ Assist in the management of resources in an effective and efficient manner, awareness of budgets and financial implications affecting the department.
Educational Responsibilities
+ Participate in the induction/orientation of new staff and act as primary mentor for learners, supervising and supporting junior staff.
+ Assist in maintaining the correct environment for teaching student nurses and be aware of their educational requirements
+ Maintain awareness of any current developments in nursing practice and issues related to emergency nursing and emergency medicine.
+ To act as a resource for non-paediatric trained nurses/doctors.
+ To assist with on-going education of families in healthcare issues including health promotion.
+ Increase your own skills and undertake further training in specific skills relating to emergency care.
Professional responsibilities
+ Exercise professional accountability as instructed by the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.
+ To maintain confidentiality surrounding the child's Emergency Department attendance/treatment, as well as demonstrating understanding and adherence to the Trust's child protection policie
+ To maintain contemporaneous, accurate documentation in line with NMC and Trust guidelines
+ To identify own learning needs and ensure own professional development. To participate in staff appraisal, staff development and training activities.
+ Demonstrate effective leadership skills, at all times and have the courage to challenge performance, practice, attitudes and behaviours that breach the Trust values and beliefs and the NMC Code of Conduct.
+ Adopt a positive approach to change. Practicing in an open, honest, motivational and professional manner maintaining high quality standards of care.
