Paediatric Metabolic Disease Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS)

Due to a change in staff working hours, we have an exciting position in the paediatric metabolic CNS team:

Band 6 Part time 22.5hrs

The Southwest regional metabolic department provides care for over 650 patients across the region. The metabolic CNS is often the first point of contact for enquiries from patients, relatives & other professionals.

Patients require specialist tests for diagnosis & monitoring, many are at risk of becoming ill very quickly & need emergency management initiated rapidly & appropriately.

A metabolic CNS will:

• Co-ordinate inpatient & outpatient care


• Organise emergency alerts & illness management


• Conduct specialist tests, investigations & infusions


• Provide education to health care professionals & families


• Provide practical & emotional support to patients & families with rare disorders


This is an excellent opportunity for a paediatric nurse with excellent verbal & written communication skills to work within a specialist team & autonomously, using their own initiative, demonstrating problem solving skills & excellent organisational skills.

This role is essential in supporting patients & their families from diagnosis, ongoing care, & management to transition or end of life care. You must be able to work flexibly to provide a safe, friendly and efficient regional service.

You will work as part of the established CNS team providing care to all aspects of the metabolic service.,
• Provide patients and staff with specialist advice to manage complex symptoms for both inpatient and outpatient care including emergency alerts and illness management


• Develop, improve, and promote the service ensuring the delivery of high quality, cost effective care utilising the support and guidance of senior colleagues


• Develop and share expertise within the multidisciplinary team


• Develop the skills to act as a resource in the care of patient's needs, ensuring an optimum level of service to patients and their carers.


• Work closely with community, hospital, relevant network staff and organisations to ensure an effective seamless service.


• Provide effective communication systems of support for patients


• Provide education to professionals, patients and their families


• Build up a skill set to embed patient and public involvement within the sphere of specialist nursing practice.


• Ensure that all patients and families are aware of all treatment options, including clinical trials


• Work as patient advocate, to help negotiate the patient journey and ensure optimum care is provided to each patient.


• Support patient investigations and care including CNS led investigations and patient infusions e.g. enzyme replacement therapy


• Coordinate and plan patient assessments as per care plans and national monitoring e.g NICE managed access agreements


• Provide cross cover to the Paediatric Metabolic, Batten's and Barth Syndrome CNS service., welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults.
