Southampton Children's Hospital (SCH) has an exciting opportunity for an experienced paediatric haematology-oncology nurse to join our team of clinical nurse specialists. You will have the opportunity to develop specialist clinical skills within paediatric malignant haematology.
Southampton is one of 21 Principle Treatment Centre's (PTC) in the UK providing advancing cancer treatments for CYP with malignant conditions, who live in the Wessex region. Our MASCC accredited oncology unit offers 12 acute beds and 3 day case beds.
As a core member of the paediatric oncology multidisciplinary team, you will provide effective leadership, information, clinical advice and support to children and their families with a haematological malignancy. You will provide holistic care from diagnosis, throughout treatment, into long term follow up and during palliative and end of life care, as required., The children's hospital provides specialist intensive and high dependency care, regional cardiac, neurological and neurosurgery, orthopaedic, urology, general, renal and ear nose and throat surgery and is the regional oncology centre. The children hospital has a dedicated children's emergency department, day surgical / medical unit, children's outpatients and Bursledon House which is a specialist unit treating a range of conditions. Southampton Children's Hospital is a centre for paediatric research projects.
Our specialist paediatric consultants, nurses and wider healthcare teams offer a wide range of diagnosis, treatment and support facilities for children and their parents.

1. Provide effective leadership, information, clinical advice and support to children and families with oncology and malignant haematology conditions throughout treatment and palliative care and act as a resource to other professionals in that child's care.
2. To administer chemotherapy treatment as appropriate and in line with leukaemia treatment protocols.
3. To gain and maintain competence on the intrathecal (IT) chemotherapy register. Undertaking at least one IT list per month.
4. Ensuring that there is a full holistic assessment, and the planned programme of care is implemented, evaluated in negotiation with the child and family and this is documented.
5. Frequently communicates very sensitive and distressing information to parents and families as appropriate and act as an advocate at all times for the child.
6. To be a direct point of contact and resource for oncology children at diagnosis and throughout the cancer trajectory.
7. Support health care professionals to identify children requiring oncology palliative care at UHS and throughout the region and be a point of contact and resource. Interface with shared care teams across the region to support smooth and seamless care for those with Leukaemia who require palliative and/or end of life care.
8. Further develop the relationship between shared care units, voluntary sector and UHS; identifying potential gaps that may require service development in regard to the provision of haematology-oncology within the current service.
9. To work on the 24/7 on-call rota for the oncology service palliative care advice for children at UHS and the region.
10. Acts as a telephone triage point for staff at UHS and throughout the region. Assesses clinical need and instigates appropriate treatment protocols.
11. To also be competent in the administration of medication under patient group directives/non-medical prescribing as relevant.
12. Provide specialist clinical and managerial advice, training, and education to healthcare professionals within and outside the Trust, nationally and internationally through a variety of teaching methods that encourages a positive learning experience.
13. To liaise with the TYA (Teenage and Young Adult) team, leading on transition specifically 'Ready Steady Go' and attend TYA MDT meetings to discuss patients transferring to TYA service.
14. Take active role in providing and accessing appropriate bereavement support for families in conjunction with Young Lives Vs Cancer social workers.
15. Support the Lead Nurse for Paediatric Oncology with service development initiatives to improve the care we give to our patients in UHS and throughout the region, Equality remains at the centre of our policymaking, service delivery, and employment practice, giving all employees equal opportunity to develop, apply for promotions, and have working arrangements that enable them to achieve a manageable work-life balance.
