Full Job Description
We have an exciting opportunity in our paediatric Physiotherapy team for someone looking to expand their paediatric skills and experience. We are a small but dynamic paediatric physiotherapy team who are proactive and passionate in the care we deliver to our patients. We provide physiotherapy to both outpatients and inpatients as well as in speciality clinics for cystic fibrosis and rheumatology. There will be the opportunity to provide group physiotherapy both in the gym and hydro settings. The successful candidate will have a keen interest in paediatrics and a willingness to learn and develop. You will have completed your core rotations including in MSK and in ward environments. You will be motivated to bring those skills to this role. You will have had some exposure to paediatrics although specific paediatric physiotherapy experience is not necessary. This post is ideal for someone considering a move into paediatrics or someone experienced looking for a part time role. - To provide a high standard physiotherapy service to paediatric in and out patients.
- To perform physiotherapeutic assessment of paediatric patients with diverse acute and chronic complex presentations, using clinical reasoning skills and manual assessment techniques to provide an accurate diagnosis of their condition to develop and deliver an individualised treatment programme.
- To be responsible, with other staff, for the supervision, education and assessment of graduate level physiotherapy students, work experience students, Band 5 physiotherapists, technical instructors and physiotherapy assistants. - To hold responsibility for own caseload and be responsible for a defined area of the service or a particular patient type, working without direct supervision.
- To undertake a significant clinical caseload to a high professional standard as an autonomous practitioner, using specialist knowledge and skills from theoretical and practical experience.
- To undertake evidence-based audit and research projects to develop and enhance personal and team's clinical practice within their area.
- To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of your own work, including the management of patients in your care.
- To take delegated responsibility from the Paediatric Band 7 Team Leader physiotherapist for managing patients with particular conditions.
- To provide spontaneous and planned advice, teaching and instruction to patients, relatives, carers and other professionals.
- To assess patient understanding of treatment proposals, gain informed consent and have the capacity to work within a legal framework with patients/children who lack capacity to consent to treatment.
- To assess and manage clinical risk within own patient caseload.
- To be responsible for maintaining accurate and comprehensive patient treatment records in line with professional and Trust standards of practice.
- To represent physiotherapy service and/or individual patients at the multi-disciplinary team meetings, to ensure the delivery of a coordinated multidisciplinary service both at the individual hospitals and across site.
- To assist the Band 7 Physiotherapist in providing the physiotherapy service to the Paediatric Ward and Special Care Baby Unit.
- To assist in the provision of hydrotherapy to paediatric inpatients and outpatients and to operate a paediatric outpatient list.
- To commit to regularly working (1 in 4 weeks pro rata) on the emergency duty on call rota, undertake the assessment and treatment of acutely ill patients with respiratory problems, who may have a complex presentation and providing advice to medical and nursing staff and other members of the multidisciplinary team regarding patients respiratory and chest functions/condition.
- To commit to regularly (1 Sat or Sun in 4 weeks pro rata) providing emergency weekend cover for the orthopaedic wards, paediatrics, intensive therapy unit and general wards (adults and Children).
- To use a range of verbal and non-verbal communication tools to communicate effectively with patients to progress rehabilitation and treatment programmes.
- To communicate patient related information/leaflets/reports/letters effectively, to ensure collaborative working with the Multi Disciplinary Team (MDT) members.
- To be responsible for organising and planning own caseload to meet service and patient priorities, readjusting plans as situations change/arise.
- To comply with the organisational and departmental policies and procedures and to be involved in the reviewing and updating of medical policies annually.
- To be responsible for the safe and competent use of gym equipment by patients and by Band 5 and student physiotherapists, through teaching, training and supervision of practice.
- To deputise for the Team Leader in their absence, taking responsibility for operational management of the team, allocating and organising the work of Band 5 and assistant staff to meet service priorities on a daily basis.
- To be aware of the Health and Safety aspects of your work and implement any policies, which may be required to improve the safety of your work area, including the prompt recording and reporting of accidents to senior staff and ensuring that equipment is used safely.
- To maintain own clinical professional development (CPD) by keeping abreast of any new research and developments and incorporating them as necessary into your clinical practice. To maintain a portfolio which demonstrates personal development and shows evidence of reflective practice, peer review, mentoring and attendance at external courses.
- To maintain and develop current knowledge of evidence-based practice in the areas in each rotation, developing specialist knowledge of particular conditions and patient types.
- To take a role in the in-service training programme by attendance at, participating in and delivering in-service training.
- To be aware of and comply with Trust Child Protection and Safeguarding policies and procedures
