Full Job Description
- To actively participate in the development and provision of Pain services both in the in-patient and out-patient areas across the Trust, through evidence-based practice. The role will encompass all aspects of acute and chronic pain.
- To provide high quality, effective, individualised pain management advice to all patients that is compassionate and caring
- To independently assess patients care needs and develop, implement, and evaluate them with supervision if required
- To assist in the development and continuation of training/education programmes
- To assist in the development and continuation of audit and research projects
- To deputise for the Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACP) / Senior Specialist Nurses (SSN) when required, for example due to staff shortages or as part of their continued professional development. Working for our organisation We are a multidisciplinary team, comprised of Advanced Clinical Practitioners, specialist nurses, consultant anaesthetists, psychologists and support staff. We are a combined service and manage both inpatient services Trust wide, and outpatient services at the Churchill Hospital. The role involves working on all 4 sites, across both inpatient and outpatients. There will be opportunities to develop within the service and expand your scope of practice, with time allocated for continued professional development, such as undertaking relevant courses and attending conferences. You will be fully supported with an allocated mentor with clear objectives identified and yearly appraisals prioritised. - To work with the multi-disciplinary team to provide optimum pain relief and symptom management and to provide a high standard of nursing care to patients in the in-patient and out-patient setting
- To take responsibility for the clinical care of patients by providing comprehensive assessment, planning, evaluation and support skills in all aspects of pain management with the support of senior colleagues
- To provide advice on pain and symptom management to medical and surgical teams across the Trust
- To provide medical and surgical teams with an individualised pain management plan for all acute and chronic pain referrals with the support of senior colleagues. This should include advice on appropriate pharmacological management, including dosages and information on non-pharmacological techniques. To monitor the effectiveness of the regimen by following-up on patients, as defined in a patient's individualised plan.
- To develop advanced clinical skills relevant to pain management with the support of the senior nurses
- Provide individualised advice, education and support to in-patients, out-patients and their carers, to manage their treatments effectively
- To assist the consultant anaesthetists with day-case procedures in the Treatment Room and monitoring of patients in the Recovery area following procedures
- To prepare the Treatment Room and Recovery areas by checking the safe functioning of equipment, and ensuring that the appropriate equipment and resources are available for the procedure lists
- To maintain responsibility for the correct administration and safe storage of medicines, according to Trust policy
- To ensure that ordering of supplies and equipment for the Pain Management Clinic, including for the Treatment and Recovery rooms, is completed in a timely and cost-effective manner
- To fulfil the role of operator, with regards to IR(ME)R regulations 2017, in the use of the image intensifier, during procedures in the Treatment Room.
- To ensure all equipment is in good working order and manage defective equipment appropriately in line with Trust quality assurance and reporting procedures
- To participate in the provision of trans-cutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) to in-patients and in nurse led out-patient clinics
- To answer patients' telephone queries in a concise, effective and clear manner
- To ensure a safe environment of patients and staff in the Pain Management Centre
- To evaluate the effects and side-effects of any clinical interventions involving pain management, whilst maintaining a safe environment for patients
- To participate in the provision of patient-controlled analgesia, epidural and regional block analgesia in the in-patient setting and the provision of neural blockage in the outpatient/day-case setting
- To promote communication between the multi-disciplinary members of the team and within clinical areas, in order to ensure seamless continuity of care and delivery of the service is maintained
- To act as a resource, under supervision, on all aspects of pain and symptom control, using current research to underpin clinical practice
- To ensure that all applicable Trust policies and guidelines are adhered to
- To abide by the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and work towards becoming a higher-level practitioner as defined in the staff members annual appraisal
- To act as the patients advocate
- To contribute to the Trust's strategy, in conjunction with the Lead Nurse and work at all times with the Trust values at the forefront of clinical and professional practice
- Be able to demonstrate the ability to work at level 6 (proficient) within the RCN Pain KSF for the Nursing Team Managerial responsibilities:
- To assist in the maintenance of effective resource management
- To attend or participate in appropriate meetings or sub-groups
- To maintain records of clinical and training activity
- To adhere to procedures related to the reporting of clinical incidents and drug errors via Ulysses
- To uphold the tenets of clinical governance
- To communicate effectively at all times and maintain a harmonious working environment Education responsibilities:
- To assume responsibility for own professional development
- To critically appraise and synthesise the outcomes of relevant research and apply them to own clinical practice
- To keep up-to-date with developments in pain management techniques and maintain evidence-based practice
- To assist in the development of patient education leaflets in order to promote patient autonomy and informed decision-making on analgesic choices or interventions
- To assist in the development and organisation of teaching sessions and to take shared responsibility for delivering high-quality education to the identified clinical areas across the Trust
- To share, with other members of the team, knowledge gained through experience, study days, courses and seminars
- To assist in the orientation of new staff, visitors and students to the department
- To act as a link nurse in designated clinical speciality/ward area to provide a point of contact for additional support with any pain related issues Research and audit
- To assist in the evaluation of the service and patient care, including monitoring of the patient experience
- Maintain awareness of relevant research, evaluations and audit, and act on the information in collaboration with colleagues to continually develop the service
- Identify areas of risk and poor quality, and address these through appropriate governance structures and forums
- To promote the use of evidence-based practice through use of information technology and extensive reading Professional responsibilities
- Conduct oneself in accordance with the NMC Code of Conduct and Trust policies
- To keep up to date with publications, guidelines and recommendations of professional bodies and specialist pain societies
- Develop new skills and knowledge pertaining to pain management
- Take responsibility for self-development through the appraisal system and work towards completing agreed personal development plan
- To participate in annual appraisal with mentor and ensure that revalidation portfolio is kept up to date
- Promote awareness and compliance amongst colleagues regarding Trust policies, procedures, guidelines and standards
- To be aware of and take appropriate action in regard to cardiac arrest, fire and major incident
- Contribute to the delivery of the Trust's strategy, The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
