Full Job Description

Working in the Collections Services department and reporting to the Senior Manager, 2D Conservation, the Paper Conservation Manager will lead the work of the RMG paper conservation studio as the senior specialist conservator responsible for conservation and preservation of the Museum's extensive, diverse paper-based collections, including art on paper, library and archive material, globes, ship plans, modern and historic photographs, and film-based media. The post holder will manage the paper conservation studio and supervise the work of the paper conservation team, including overseeing professional development and welfare. They will enable the delivery of the Museums' exhibitions and loans programme by providing condition assessments, undertaking complex conservation treatments and contributing to the research and understanding of the collections. Further core responsibilities include advising on timescales for conservation and mounting of objects for display, assisting with gallery
installs and rotations, and conducting site visits and courier trips as required, working in collaboration with other departments.
The successful candidate will have substantial practical experience of conservation of paper-based collections in a gallery, museum, library, or archive setting. Experience of coordinating and preparing items for loans and exhibitions, including condition reporting, courier duties, packing, and display requirements is essential, as is experience of supervising, managing and motivating staff or volunteers, with strong leadership skills. The postholder will have experience of COSHH and Health and Safety requirements for conservation and studio management, and strong interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex issues effectively. Computer literacy is also essential for this role, with a good knowledge of Microsoft applications and museum collections management systems.
This is a full time, permanent role in Band 4. Core hours of work will be 36 per week, working 5 days between the hours of 8am-4pm, although flexible hours can be agreed with line management.
