Full Job Description

Applications are invited for multiple positions at both Research Associate and Senior Research Associate level as Mathematical-AI-Researchers (postdoctoral positions) in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics as part of the new Infosys-Cambridge AI Lab to work at the interface of science and machine learning.

The AI Lab has been created to facilitate reserch in the following themes: agentic AI (multi-agent systems, RL), theoretical machine learning, symbolic AI, and simulation-based approaches. The goal of the AI Lab is to drive scientific discoveries through automation, and to build a mathematical understanding of machine learning using methods from theoretical physics that have wide application beyond science.

To facilitate these advances, we seek a talented, promising, and diverse group of researchers with a completed (or near completed) PhD in physics, machine learning or applied mathematics or related fields.

Your role as Mathematical-AI-Researcher is to develop and conduct individual and collaborative research within one or more of the themes listed above and to identify and pursue synergies in an interdisciplinary context. You must be able to communicate material of a technical nature beyond your immediate scientific field (e.g. to policymakers or industry leaders) and to enable discussion of real-world applications.

You may be asked to assist in the supervision of student projects, the development of student research skills, provide instruction, or plan/deliver seminars relating to the research area. Mathematical-AI-Researchers will be expected to plan and manage their own research and administration, with guidance if required, and to assist in the preparation of proposals and applications to external bodies.

As part of this role, you will be part of a team who will spend part of their time working in the Infosys London office in Canary Wharf. We anticipate close interaction with Infosys AI researchers within the agreed themes, however they will not have any influence on the choice or direction of your research. There will be the opportunity to work on industry projects via consulting if desired, but this is not required, nor the main purpose of the role. The connection with Infosys will also help with creation of multi-media demonstrations of your research outputs which you can use to publicise your work.

These positions come with generous travel allowances and computing expenses.

Our contract with Infosys is initially for a three-year period, with funds paid annually. Given this, the contract will be for one year in the first instance, renewed annually.
