Full Job Description

The Aga Khan University's Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations in London seeks to appoint a Persian Language Instructor for the period September 2024 to May 2025. The incumbent will teach face to face Modern Persian language structure and skills at ab initio and post ab initio levels, via materials to be agreed with the Language Coordinator.The course will run for 32 weeks and will include 7 contact hours with students each week. The successful candidate will be expected to set and mark all assessments and attend teaching committee meetings as necessary.,

  • Face-to-face teaching of Modern Persian language structure and skills at ab initio and post ab initio levels, via materials to be agreed with the Language Coordinator, to students pursuing AKU-ISMC's MA in Muslim Cultures

  • Preparation and/or updating of syllabuses and course outlines every semester, including review of course assessment, objectives and intended outcomes, in liaison with the Language Coordinator

  • Preparation of class materials as necessary

  • Regular maintenance of course VLE pages (Moodle) with course outlines, class materials and other information

  • Monitoring student progress in coordination with (as appropriate) Manager of Educational Programmes, Head of Educational Programmes and Language Coordinator

  • Weekly monitoring of student attendance, and production of termly statistics and progress reports, in accordance with the regulations

  • Designing, setting, marking and double marking of examination papers in accordance with course objectives and ISMC assessment criteria, in conjunction with the Language Coordinator

  • Invigilation of end-of-semester examinations

  • Attendance at meetings of examination boards, if required

  • Attendance at evaluation meetings, coordination meetings and other such forums, as required.

  • Advising on matters relating to student education in respect of Persian language, as required

  • Liaising with Head of Educational Programmes, Manager of Educational Programmes, Language Coordinator and other colleagues as necessary


  • Other Duties

  • Other occasional tasks assigned by the Head of Educational Programmes on an ad hoc basis, according to institutional need.

    The incumbent should have a postgraduate degree in Persian with prior experience in teaching Persian language to non-native speakers at the post-graduate level, preferably supported by a recognised language teaching qualification.

  • Experience of teaching and supervising a culturally diverse group of students and faculty

  • Strong commitment to excellence in teaching and advising in a multicultural environment that fosters diversity, and dedication to quality/development of student learning.

  • Ability to adopt/develop innovative methods of language teaching.

  • Excellent command of English with proven excellent communication skills
