Full Job Description

To develop, deliver and evaluate postgraduate and undergraduate teaching and assessment up to Masters level. To supervise students and optometrists on placement in clinics, provide feedback and be responsible for the pastoral care of students. To carry out administrative duties within the work area as required. To be responsible for delivery and content of a module on taught courses. Teaching

  • To provide clinical leadership effectively and efficiently by leading and motivating students and optometrists on placement to deliver high quality clinical practice in a culture of continuous improvement and collaborative working.
  • To supervise optometrists on placement in clinics.
  • To act as a module leader for teaching including co-ordinating with other contributors to ensure delivery of a high standard of teaching to meet student needs and expectations.
  • To design and deliver appropriate teaching materials at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
  • To identify the need for developing/ revising the content or structure of modules and curriculum and make proposals on how this should be achieved.
  • To supervise and teach in a variety of settings, mainly in clinics but also small group sessions and large lectures.
  • To set, mark and assess coursework and examinations and provide feedback to students, including replying to E-Mail and other communication with students within an appropriate time period.
  • To be involved in programme level planning of teaching and clinics and contribute to wide planning processes of the School and the University.

  • To undertake personal and professional development that is appropriate to and will enhance the performance in the role of Module Leader (Teaching and Scholarship).
  • To engage effectively with industrial, commercial, and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions to raise awareness of the school's profile locally, to cultivate alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration.
  • To carry out other forms of scholarship including work associated with assessments, setting and marking assessments and providing constructive feedback to students in a timely manner, administration, participation in committee work.
  • Act as a personal tutor, providing support and guidance to students, building, and establishing trust.
  • To participate in national conferences, seminars and other academic and professional forums to disseminate the results of one's own scholarship.

    1. GOC registration. You will be expected to maintain CPD to ensure continued GOC registration, and to uphold registration with an NHS Wales Health Board to practice as an Optometrist in Cardiff University and/or associated patient-facing clinics.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Experience 2. Experience of teaching at postgraduate level in a variety of settings. 3. Significant experience as a practising optometrist 4. Proven experience of delivering and developing paediatric optometry services and teaching. Pastoral, Communication and Team Working 5. A proven record of clinical or academic leadership. 6. A dependable individual, who is pro-active, adaptable, with excellent people skills and a willingness to contribute positively to the school. The ability to present complex and conceptual ideas clearly and confidently to others using high level skills and a range of media. 7. The ability to provide appropriate pastoral support to students, appreciate the needs of individual students and their circumstances and to act as a personal tutor. 8. Ability to act as clinic supervisor/or module leader and co-ordinate with others to ensure student needs and expectations are met. Other 9. Proven ability to demonstrate creativity, innovation and teamworking. Desirable Criteria 1. A Postgraduate qualification in a related field of study, e.g. Prof Cert Paediatric Eye Care. 2. Evidence of collaborations with the optometry sector. 3. Proven ability to adapt to the changing requirements of clinical practice and/or the Higher Education community. 4. Evidence of ability to participate in and develop both internal and external networks and utilise them to enhance the teaching and research activities of the school.

    The innovative Postgraduate Taught programmes at WOPEC in the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences, Cardiff University incorporate both distance learning and contact teaching and assessment. We are seeking to appoint a part time module leader to join our motivated postgraduate teaching team. Module Leaders work to develop, deliver, and evaluate modules/ programmes within the postgraduate qualification provision in the school. As well as teaching and assessing students, they are responsible for the day to day running of a module and the teaching and assessment including co-ordinating other members of staff that contribute. This post will contribute to and lead the modules in paediatric optometry. This role is part time (3.5 hours per week) and open ended. Most of the teaching and assessment is online but attendance at a number of in-person days in Cardiff is required in October or January (depending on when the module runs) and attendance at Exam Boards and Board of Studies each year.
