Full Job Description
Thurrock Council's Planning Service plays a crucial role in ensuring sustainable growth and protecting the character of our borough. As a Planning Officer, you will carry out a broad range of functions under the Town and Country Planning Acts and other related legislation. This includes processing planning applications, providing expert advice, and ensuring that the Development Management team meets high standards of speed, quality, and customer service. You will work closely with senior colleagues and contribute to the overall objectives of the Planning Services team., Development Management: Assist in the processing of a wide range of planning applications, including ensuring they are valid, carrying out site visits, analysing planning history, and preparing assessments and recommendations.
- Legislation Awareness: Stay informed about relevant planning legislation, policies, and government guidance. Ensure practice and procedures align with any changes to these regulations.
- Customer Service: Maintain a customer-oriented approach by fostering positive relationships with stakeholders, local interest groups, and the public. Provide clear advice on planning policies and assist with planning inquiries as appropriate.
- Planning Advice: Support pre-application services by meeting with applicants or their agents to discuss proposals, negotiating where necessary, and advising on the implications of council policies.
- Collaboration: Work closely with Senior and Principal Officers, assisting in casework, site visits, and enforcement duties as required.
- Report Preparation: Draft letters, reports, and recommendations on planning applications and related matters, ensuring they are well written and based on relevant planning policies.
- Liaison: Liaise with other sections of the Directorate, Council departments, Members, and external stakeholders to share information, provide advice, and ensure the effective delivery of planning services.
- Committee Support: Attend meetings of the Council and its Committees, including site visits, as required. Ensure that actions arising from meetings are carried out properly and in a timely manner.
A strong understanding of planning legislation and relevant policies.
- Experience in processing planning applications, including conducting site visits and drafting reports and recommendations.
- Ability to maintain a customer-focused approach and build positive working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present complex planning information clearly.
- Ability to work independently and manage a diverse caseload while meeting deadlines and targets.
- Knowledge of development management processes and local government procedures.
