Full Job Description

The Pleural specialist nurse will be required to provide a specialist nursing service for patients with pleural disease and will contribute to the care of patients requiring pleural procedures including chest drains and pleural aspirations. They will provide education, advice and support to patients and their relatives/carers. They will be required to work as an autonomous practitioner, taking responsibility for this patient group, providing assessment, support, and information. They will liaise with all healthcare professionals providing care to pleural patients, and the role will include maintenance of accurate records, involvement in audit, clinical research, and participation in multi-disciplinary teaching. The role will also include working regular days working on bronchoscopy lists in the intervention unit., The successful candidate will be required to provide a specialist nursing service for patients with pleural disease and will contribute to the care of patients requiring pleural procedures including chest drains and pleural aspirations. They will provide education, advice and support to patients and their relatives/carers, both in the hospital setting and, in the community. This will also require effective communication with district nurses and GP surgeries. They will be required to work as an autonomous practitioner, providing assessment, support, and information to inpatient and outpatient services. They will liaise with all healthcare professionals providing care to pleural patients, and the role will include maintenance of accurate records, involvement in audit, clinical research, and participation in multi-disciplinary teaching. The role will also include working regular days working on bronchoscopy lists in the respiratory intervention unit., · To provide management, advice, and support for patients with pleural conditions referred to Respiratory Medicine/Pleural service. · To assist in the assessment of adult patients admitted with pleural disease, Providing the necessary information, management advice and follow-up. · Support with discharge of patients managed within respiratory medicine with pleural disease according to agreed protocols:- Assessment of suitability for discharge and elective readmission for treatment;- Co-ordinating treatment package;- Community liaison and support for patients with indwelling pleural catheters · Assist in pleural disease clinics (helping assess patients, co-ordinating investigations, follow-up clinics and MDTs). · Assist medical staff with pleural aspirations, chest drain insertion and thoracoscopy. · To undertake and support an educational role for the management of intercostal chest drains to support ward teams. · To liaise with medical, nursing staff and allied health professionals within the OUH · To effectively communicate with external providers i.e., GP's, district nurses etc · To act as a resource within the Trust for the management of pleural disease · To act as a role model for all staff within the Respiratory Medicine Unit and to work effectively as part of the respiratory specialist team To ensure effective lines of communication within the multi-disciplinary team to achieve an optimal level of service to respiratory patients and their families.

We are looking for someone with excellent communication skills who has a passion for respiratory medicine and wants to learn more about pleural disease and management. Previous working in an acute respiratory environment is essential for this role, although full training regarding pleural management will be provided, as you will be working alongside our current pleural nurse specialist.,

  • 3 years post registration experience in acute ward/environment
  • Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience in an acute respiratory nursing role
  • Working at band 6 level, You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
