Full Job Description
You will play a key part in our Everyone home safe every day' safety vision, our promise to safely transport more people and goods where they need to be on time, every time.
When a section of track is required for maintenance and trains cannot run, it is handed over by the operators to the engineers, who take possession. Special protective measures are used to prevent access by unauthorised trains. When the track is returned to the operators, the engineers give up the possession.
The Person in Charge of Possession (PICOP) will communicate with the signaller and then coordinate PSS to block the lines, in order to protect the engineering teams working within the possession limits.
As a PSS you will normally be working alone and on nights out on track. You will receive written instructions and Safe Work Packs prior to your shift and then carry out the placing and lifting of detonator protection, in accordance with the instructions given to you by the PICOP. You will undertake this safety critical role and ensure the safety of yourself and others around you. You may be instructed to allow train movements through the protection limits., · Undertake Possessions Protection activities as directed
· Operate Level Crossing Barriers as directed (if competency held)
· Able to drive road vehicles with full licence
· Check staff certificates in date for validation and report same expiry date to line management, · Ensure that you work safely and comply with all current and relevant health, safety and environmental legislation including Railway Group, Line Standards and Network Rail Standards
· Ensure that you assess and control risks and plan and implement safe methods of working and are competent to carry out the task
· Ensure the safety of passengers, the general public and the environment is not affected by the activities of you, your staff and contractors under your control
· Ensure that accidents, incidents or near misses to are reported to Route Control, and to the Duty Operations Delivery Manager
· Ensure you participate in the Company cascade safety briefings
