Full Job Description

We are seeking a Senior Postdoctoral Researcher to lead and develop cutting-edge research in the field of Materials Systems Innovation within the Materials Science Research Centre (MSRC). This position focuses on advancing interdisciplinary research and designing a materials systems platform that enables self-organising circular biomaterial supply chains. Leveraging concepts from social anthropology and biomimetics, this role builds on the research base of the Textiles Circularity Centre (TCC) and aims to create robust community network design tools for circular biomaterial systems., + Lead high-quality and collaborative research initiatives aligned with the Materials Systems Innovation agenda and the broader goals of the MSRC.
+ Develop a research proposal on "Interdisciplinary community network design tools for circular biomaterial systems," focusing on circularity and sustainable supply chains.
+ Formulate research objectives that align with the strategic direction of the Centre and the College, working closely with the Centre Director.
+ Prepare and submit funding proposals to UK and international bodies, industry partners, and other sources to support research goals and personal career development.
+ Manage research grants, ensuring effective execution, resource management, and impactful research outcomes.
+ Collaborate with academic, industrial, and third-sector partners on research and knowledge exchange projects, supporting the Centre's partnerships.
+ Engage with sponsor companies, contributing to collaborative research projects and maintaining productive relationships.
+ Produce and disseminate research outputs through books, peer-reviewed journals, conferences, and other channels, aiming for REF submission quality of at least 3

  • + Communicate research outcomes to diverse audiences, including through public engagement, tailoring presentations for specialist and non-specialist groups.
    + Participate in academic, industry, and policy networks, representing the Centre and sharing its research with the wider community.
    + Contribute to project and team activities, workshops, and events, offering ideas for the Centre's development and promotion.
    + Support the RCA academic community through teaching and presentations, and engage in cross-college activities, committees, and boards.
    + Assist with the delivery of Executive Education courses and workshops, where appropriate.
    + Supervise junior researchers and project workers, ensuring their progress and outputs meet agreed deadlines.
    + Ensure all research adheres to the highest standards of ethics, integrity, research data management, and governance.
    + Comply with RCA procedures for procurement, health and safety, and equipment use, ensuring project data protection.
    + Contribute to the general administrative tasks of the Centre as required by senior staff.

    + The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate at least one of the following
    o PhD in engineering design, human behaviour and/or systems in the circular economy
    o or equivalent level of experience in a different sector
    o or a Masters degree and significant experience in research projects
    + Extensive research experience, particularly in interdisciplinary fields and/or community-based research.
    + Proven ability to develop successful funding proposals and manage research grants.
    + Strong publication record, with outputs suitable for submission to REF.
    + Experience in collaborative research with academic and non-academic partners.
    + Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences.
