Full Job Description

ITU is a 10 bedded combined High Dependency and Intensive Care unit that cares for patients who are critically ill; providing all aspects of nursing care and multidisciplinary rehabilitation after critical illness., The successful applicant will supervise and support staff in line with educator requirements, ensuring the MDT have the skills to assess care needs and implement programs of planned care, as the Nursing Educational Lead. You will actively participate in clinical practice as an effective role model; mentor and preceptor to junior members of the MDT; whilst promoting & maintaining effective communication with all disciplines internally & across directorial boundaries within the Trust. At times you will be expected to work as part of the Intensive care senior nursing team by maintaining a Band 6 clinical role and will represent the unit at Critical Care network education events. The applicant must hold a post graduate qualification in Critical Care, (e.g. Step 2 and step 3 competencies or equivalent), a teaching/assessing/ mentoring qualification is essential, and previous experience of the Band 6 role is preferred. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Registered Nurse with a qualification in Critical Care nursing, and experience in educating and mentoring staff. The role will require you to lead and facilitate the continuing professional development within the Critical Care unit for all grades of staff, with the focus of positively influencing the quality of care delivered to patients. You will be integral to the planning and co-ordination of educational activities and must demonstrate the ability to manage resources effectively to meet the needs of the service. An in depth knowledge of Intensive care across the specialist field, and evidence of effective leadership, excellent communication skills, developed organisational and interpersonal skills are essential. The role will require a flexible working pattern including occassional unsocial working hours to meet the changing development needs of the team., progress to achieve a PGCE or equivalent, if not already.

We provide hospital services from two acute sites - Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.
