Full Job Description
o To provide the postholder with a unique opportunity to develop a solid foundation of skills and experience in secondary care paediatricrefraction and complex contact lens fitting whilst being exposed to and gaining experience in the many speciality ophthalmology clinicsthat run in ABUHB.o To participate in the delivery of core optometry services as part of their scheme for registration.o The post-holder will be required to undertake the College of Optometrists pre-registration programme and will be supervised andsupported by the Clinical Lead for Optometry in Paediatrics and Contact lenses.o The post-holder will have the opportunity to gain experience in all specialities within Ophthalmology clinic during their time at ABUHBand will be supported and encouraged to do so. This will include exposure to clinical scenarios reflective of the competencies requiredby the CoO. Clinics covered include but are not limited to; Medical Retina, Glaucoma, Corneal, Paediatrics (including Orthoptics) andEmergency Eye Care clinic (EEC).o Further training beyond entry-level Optometry competences (as mandated by the CoO) will be provided in areas commonly specialisedby Optometrists (i.e. Glaucoma and Medical Retina).o The post holder would be required to undertake additional work in a primary care setting to accompany this secondary care role toensure the timely progression through the CoO Pre-Registration programme and broad experience base. Main duties of the job o To continue to build on the core competencies commenced within the undergraduate Optometry degreeo To carry out delegated administrative and clinical responsibilities to support the smooth running of the Optometry Department.o To be proactive in the collaboration with the Clinical Lead to plan the development of their own clinical skills and excellence in order topass the College of Optometrists exams.o To take initiative in understanding their own learning and experience requirements to progress successfully through the CoO preregistration programme.o To develop clinical decision-making skills and work towards becoming an autonomous clinician in all areas of Core Optometry whilstgaining more experience in extended roles.o Initially with qualified supervision, building towards independence in relation to formulating management and treatment plans, and makeonwards referral where necessary.o To update patient notes accordingly in line with good clinical practice principles.o To ensure that all administrative tasks associated with their patients are completed in a timely manner to avoid delay to patient care.o To ensure that all aspects of clinical governance are adhered to; specifically with regards to patient records and data for the use ofclinical development.o To follow national and local protocol with regards to the follow-up/discharge and management of patients, including recent WGOSpathways, under the supervision of a qualified colleague., The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply. Undertake, with appropriate supervision Paediatric refractions, fundoscopy and Complex contact lens fitting and follow up Work within the multidisciplinary team to ensure that the care delivered to all patients is of the highest standards and quality. To develop clinical decision-making skills and work towards becoming an autonomous clinician in all areas of Core Optometry whilstgaining more experience in extended roles. Analysis of optometric clinical tests following eye examinations under appropriate supervision Initially with qualified supervision, building towards independence in relation to formulating management and treatment plans, and makeonwards referral where necessary.
