Full Job Description

To provide technical leadership of Burns & McDonnell's UK Substations Primary Section within the (power) Transmission & Distribution Global Practice. This includes:

  • Undertaking senior technical roles on project specific multi-disciplinary engineering teams;
  • Being a senior technical authority on Substations Primary Engineering, as it relates to power T&D infrastructure (electricity substations, overhead lines, and high voltage underground cables), within the wider company;
  • Growing and enhancing the Substations Primary Section engineering capability in the UK business; and
  • Leadership responsibility for the technical competence of the Substations Primary UK team
  • Technical development, competence management and career path support within the Substations Primary Section.
  • Responsibilities:
  • Leadership of the UK substation Primary technical delivery, competence and professional excellence for the entire discipline, UK and International.
  • Working closely with the Substations Section Manager to assemble suitable electrical engineering personnel from across our global offices to deliver UK projects.
  • Support with resource planning to ensure that suitably experienced and capable resource to undertake the primary disciple input to substation projects through interaction with the Substations Section Manager, Engineering Director, Planners, Design Managers, other Technical Excellence Managers and the design team. Identifying and resolving any constraints to delivery.
  • Assume recruitment responsibility, reviewing CVs, interviewing, preparing recruitment documentation and on-boarding new recruits into the UK Substations design team.
  • Leadership of the technical quality of outputs for the Substations Primary design team. Ensuring that the design meets customer standards, specification, Eurocodes, British Standards and good industry practise standards.
  • Be a lead technical person for Substations Primary engineering work packages relating to electricity transmission and distribution infrastructure.
  • Where appropriate and required, Contractor Design Approval Engineer (CDAE), as defined by National Grid's procedures, or equivalent role as defined by other clients.
  • Provide technical leadership and support to the Burns & McDonnell Substations team based in BMI, Mumbai, India. To include training, competence management, career development and capability assessments in support of BMI Substations Primary Lead.
  • Supporting the BMI Substations Primary Department Manager with recruitment of UK team members based in Mumbai. Define requirements, reviewing CVs, interviewing, and supporting on-boarding new recruits into the BMI UK Substations Primary team.
  • Providing technical leadership of engineering input to bids and work winning for the discipline.
  • Development of Innovation within the Substations Primary design/delivery team improving methods of working to improve safety, reduce design costs, construction costs/time and improving efficiency.
  • Development of team competence criteria. Ensuring that the competencies are measured and tracked/updated to understand team capability.
  • Ensure the section's technical ability is maintained at a professional level and manage training, development and recruitment for the team.
  • Support the Substations Section Manager to monitor the performance of staff through Performance Reviews and lead Performance Management where required.
  • Understand, maintain and apply company QA policy and procedures. Ensure corrective action in respect of products, services and the quality system is effective.
  • Drive the introduction of advanced techniques for design delivery for the discipline, resulting in the development of new or improved processes, equipment, and/or technological methods working with the Substations Manager and Technologies Director.
  • Maintain compliance to CDM Regulations and all other legal and regulatory requirements associated with the nature of design undertaken.
  • Undertake technical quality assurance reviews and provide design approval/sign-off, as required, on Substations Primary engineering designs.
  • Maintain technical compliance to applicable Burns & McDonnell and client design management standards, processes, and procedures on all work delivered by Substations Primary Section staff.
  • Develop and implement policies, processes, procedures, standards, and technical guidance, as required to continually improve the engineering capability within the Substations Primary Section.
  • Act as Principal Designer representative, as defined by UK Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015, where required.
  • Provide technical leadership in the approach to the preparation of project proposals and lead tender presentations.
  • Drive 'Safety by Design' approach on all projects, at all times.
  • Support nurturing of a safety and technical excellence culture through emphasis on staff competence, diligence, and responsible attitude.
  • Understanding wider industry best practices and client technical standards/procedures for construction, operations & maintenance, and decommissioning, in order to drive safety, constructability, and operability throughout whole asset lifecycles.
  • Maintain project compliance to Burns & McDonnell's UK Integrated Management System.
  • Support nurturing of world-class customer service culture, to drive client success.
  • Be an ambassador for Burns & McDonnell at all times through acting in accordance with expected high ethical and moral standards, and in adherence to Burns & McDonnell Code of Conduct.
  • Provide strong but supportive general personnel management of line reports, with emphasis on supporting continued development, providing technical guidance, and establishing training needs.
  • Actively support marketing and business development activities, building relationships with clients and generating new business
  • Seeking and development of future business opportunities through nurturing of client relationships, active pursuit of new project leads, and elevation of the Burns & McDonnell brand.
  • Identifying new skills and competencies required within the Burns & McDonnell team to meet business needs and actively supporting development and recruitment of talent, including candidate interviewing.
  • Act as technical leader in T&D infrastructure Substations Primary design and contribute to relevant professional bodies and industry groups. Maintain Continued Professional Development (CPD).
  • Interpret and establish policies, procedures, and strategic goals of the organisation.
  • Demonstrate creativity, foresight, and judgment in anticipating and solving problems.
  • Advance and develop Department tools and workflows to increase efficiency of designs, specification development, and project execution.
  • Undertake other duties and responsibilities as may reasonably be asked of this position by Senior Management.

    Minimum
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical / Electrical Engineering, from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 10 years of Substations Primary design experience.
  • Professional registration as a Chartered Engineer.
  • Membership of a relevant professional Engineering Institution (e.g. IET).
  • Relevant Health & Safety qualification (e.g. IOSH Managing Safely, NEBOSH Cert./Dip., NVQ Level 3 in H&S related subject).
  • Desirable
  • Membership of a professional Health & Safety organisation (e.g. APS, ISC, IOSH etc.).
  • Experience fulfilling the role of Contractor Design Approval Engineer (CDAE).
  • Substation safety and access training (e.g. NSI 30, BESC:AIM etc.)
  • Formal training in CDM 2015, Temporary Works, and Impressed Voltages.
  • Knowledge of engineering design management best practices with ability to implement this knowledge.
  • Advanced knowledge in Substations Primary engineering related design, calculations and design systems.
  • Understanding of the requirements of relevant UK Health & Safety legislation relating to design and construction work in the electricity supply industry.
  • Understanding of the requirements of relevant UK Environmental and Waste Management legislation.
  • Thorough understanding of current Construction (Design & Management) Regulations, and experience of discharging all required duties of the CDM Principal Designer representative.
  • Experience of working in a lead Substations Primary engineering design role on National Grid Electricity Transmission projects in the UK and acting as a TP137 CDAE for Substations Primary design.
  • Good knowledge of National Grid's Transmission Procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge and experience applying National Grids Technical Specification, Technical Guidance Notes, and Design Handbooks relating to Substations Primary engineering of electricity T&D infrastructure in the UK.
  • Understanding of the causes and consequences of Impressed Voltage.
  • IT literate, with good knowledge of using Microsoft Office applications.
  • Good knowledge of applying CAD technology/software to Substations Primary engineering design.
  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills.
  • Strong persuasion and negotiation skills with clients and employees.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to deal effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders across clients, industry, government and public.
  • Able to manage tasks on multiple projects and conflicting deadlines.
