Full Job Description

We are currently recruiting for a Principal Civil Engineer to join our Nuclear Power and Engineering Technical Services (NPETS) business. NPETS is entering an exciting phase of opportunity by supporting our key client's UK nuclear fleet through a business transformation, and by supporting new small modular reactor developers. Our work is varied, covering New Build, Generation, Life Extension, and Defueling, and our capabilities are in demand across the nuclear sector. Are you good at spinning plates? It's not something you see very often on TV these days, but figuratively, it is a very useful skill, one of which is vital if your goal is to keep nuclear power stations operating safely, contributing to the UK's Net Zero carbon target, or to help prepare them for decommissioning. The UK's five operating stations deliver 16% of the UK's power, and it takes a large team delivering 100's of projects to enable these stations to continue generating as well as defuel the three stations that have ceased operation - and that's a lot of plates. And this is where you come in Your role will be to co-ordinate multi-discipline engineering teams to deliver complex engineering solutions to time, cost and quality on projects of varying sizes. If you're familiar with project delivery, you'll know that they have plenty of moving parts and complexity, which is why you'll be working alongside our Operations Managers and with our Framework Service team too. People are at the heart of everything we do Centre to the success of the role will be your people skills, building effective relationships and interacting with multiple internal and external stakeholders in multiple locations. You'll also work closely with colleagues to support activities that offer the best service to the client. Through your interactions, you'll be able to gather useful intelligence on client needs and work with the team to deliver innovative solutions. You'll utilise your strong communication and engagement skills to achieve client, people and business outcomes, working with your team and peers that are based in different locations across the UK. As well as focusing on the support to this framework, you'll get involved in other aspects of our high-performing business. We're continuously evolving and growing the business, so there's plenty of opportunity to evolve and grow your skills and career too. This role will be based at one of our NPETS offices (Gloucester, Newcastle, Warrington, Bristol or Knutsford). We put flexibility at the heart of what we do and we're happy to consider flexible working patterns. Key responsibilities will be:

  • Working with integrated multi-disciplinary teams to deliver high profile projects. Manage programmes and resources, delivering to time and budget
  • Take ownership of technical challenges, develop a strategy and implement the solution through engagement with internal and external stakeholders
  • Produce and review design deliverables (assumption notes, technical specifications and calculation notes, etc)
  • Direct resources to perform analysis tasks as necessary
  • Develop and review safety case inputs, such as Safety Functional Requirements (SFRs), Structural Design Method Statements (SDMSs) andDesign Substantiation Reports (DSR)
  • Review and justify design decisions to the Office of Nuclear Regulation (ONR)
  • Fulfil and take ownership of CDM responsibilities
  • Support preparation of fee proposals
  • MEng, MSc, BEng or BSc in Civil Engineering or other relevant degree level qualification
  • Chartered with relevant institution (e.g., ICE or IStructE)

Ability to work within, and where required, lead a design team, and also able to collaborate within multi-disciplinary teams
  • Previous experience in the design and/or construction of civil engineering solutions using Eurocodes (and ideally American codes)
  • Demonstrable experience in the design of heavy infrastructure projects, nuclear or regulated industry
  • Experience using finite element modelling software and associated post processing software, with experience in validation and verification of modelling tools and their outputs
  • Understanding of the use of design tools within a BIM environment
  • Knowledge and understanding of UK Nuclear Regulatory process in field of civil engineering is extremely desirable

People are our greatest asset, and we offer a competitive package to retain and attract the best talent.
  • In addition to the benefits you'd expect, UK employees also receive free single medical cover and digital GP service, family-friendly benefits such as enhanced parental leave pay and free membership of employee assistance and parental programmes, plus reimbursement towards relevant professional development and memberships. We also give back to our communities through our Collectively program which incorporates matched-funding, paid volunteering time and charitable donations. Work-life balance and flexibility is a key focus area for us. We're happy to discuss hybrid, part-time and flexible working hours, patterns and locations to suit you and our business.
