Full Job Description

Location: Agile, working from home and at the Council House, Priory Road, Dudley and within the borough undertaking site visits/meetings. Dudley Council is looking for an enthusiastic historic environment professional to join the Regeneration Projects and Placemaking Service. You will manage the work of the Historic Environment team in liaison with the Placemaking Design and Delivery Manager. The main duties are:

  • To provide advice and guidance to the local planning authority on listed and locally listed buildings, conservation areas and on other design and conservation matters to both internal and external stakeholders e.g. planning applications, pre-application advice and relevant enforcement enquiries.
  • To work with colleagues in Planning Policy, in the preparation and implementation of the Historic Environment related aspects of the Local Plan, including undertaking Conservation Area Character Appraisals.
  • To deal with a caseload of enforcement cases and related activities, including Heritage at Risk, progressing Listed Building Enforcement Notices, S215 Notices, Repair Notices and Article 4 directions.
  • To work with other members of the service, directorate and wider council on regeneration projects, recent examples being the Brierley Hill High Street Heritage Action Zone (HAZ), Brierley Hill Future High Street Fund, Dudley Towns Fund and Dudley Townscape Heritage scheme.
  • To Manage and maintain the Council's Historic Environment Record (HER) and Corporate GIS dataset to national data standards and keep the HER up-to-date and on-line for the use of the local planning authority.
  • Dudley is considered the historic capital of the Black Country, with a wealth of architectural and archaeological heritage, with 11 Scheduled Monuments, approaching 300 Listed and 400 Locally listed buildings; 22 Conservation Areas; and 2 registered historic parks and gardens. The area includes Dudley Castle, the Red House Glass Cone, an extensive network of canals and is part of the Black Country Geopark. It is also the focus for an extensive programme of exciting regeneration projects, including the Wednesbury to Brierley Hill Metro Extension and Castle Hill Vision. The post holder will be able to work in a mobile and agile way, working from home and also from the office, located at the Council House in Dudley Town Centre. Working as part of a friendly, experienced and supportive specialist team, working in a fast-paced environment, reporting directly to the Placemaking Design and Delivery Manager.
