Full Job Description

Here at Transport for London (TfL) part of our role is to keep London's roads moving. Given that 80% of all journeys in London are made by road, it's a very important part of what we do.

TfL has full operational responsibility for the Transport for London Road Network (TLRN) - 580 km of major roads in the Capital, called Red Routes, which play a strategic role in keeping London moving. They make up 5% cent of London's roads but carry more than 30% of its traffic. We're responsible for the operation of the Capital's 6,000 sets of traffic signals.

We now have an exciting opportunity to join the team as a Principal Operational Control Officer.

Working within a matrix management environment, you'll deliver the development, maintenance, and enhancement of appropriate impact management technology solutions for the management of people movement strategies, traffic systems and the management of road works and events, to minimise disruption on London's streets. You'll ensure that these systems meet the needs of those delivering the Mayor's Transport Strategy, operationally, functionally, and reliably., Your duties will include, but not be limited to:

  • Responsible for the delivery of agreed projects within financial, time and quality control and resource management constraints

  • Support the delivery, strategic horizon management for suite of operational systems dealing with people movement

  • Deliver reliable and functional business operational systems, to enable TfL to undertake its statutory functions and to deliver the associated elements of the Mayor's Transport Strategy

  • Provide client-side assurance and governance of agreed system development projects, in conjunction with the project delivery team

  • Manage the engagement with the users of agreed systems, including communications strategies to promote awareness and usage among industry partners across London

  • Manage and maintain relationships for agreed systems with key platform experts, other client stakeholders and the user community to support the continuous improvement and development of those systems and manage the relationship between TfL and its key external suppliers

  • Engage with users of agreed technology systems, identifying and analysing the requirements of key internal and external industry stakeholders regarding system usage, proposed enhancements, identifying potential benefits

  • Manage the main interfaces between the business, the internal supplier (Technology & Data) and the third party in the operation of contract arrangements, design and delivery of enhancements/development and the implementation of upgrades and system enhancements

  • Provide regular reports on the operation of agreed technology systems and usage, ensuring systems are operating as expected in terms of performance and usage, providing recommendations for potential action

  • Lead on the provision of training for agreed technology systems for the user community, ensuring users can fully utilise the systems to maximise benefits to the business/TfL

  • Knowledge

  • Knowledge of project delivery, methodology including Agile delivery (Highly desirable)

  • Degree and / or equivalent professional qualification and / or significant work experience (Desirable)

  • Understanding of the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991, Traffic Management Act 2004, the Network Management Duty and other relevant legislation (Desirable)

  • Operational understanding of people movement strategies and/or impact mitigation for a urban road network (Desirable)

  • Knowledge of the operation of a helpdesk environment and customer support (Desirable)

  • Knowledge of SAP system, raising Purchase orders (Desirable)
