Be a Leader in High-Voltage Substation Design Are you an experienced Power Systems Design Engineer with expertise in primary design, high-voltage substation plant, and systems operating at voltages up to 400kV? We are looking for a Principal Engineer to lead innovative and technically complex substation projects that support the energy transition and net-zero goals. Our Power Systems team specialises in high-voltage design and technical advisory services, delivering cutting-edge solutions for some of the most challenging and prestigious projects in the UK and internationally. The Role: As a Principal Primary Power Systems Engineer, you will lead the primary and plant design for complex substation projects, from concept through detailed design to delivery. Working closely with our multidisciplinary teams, you will deliver robust and innovative solutions for AIS/GIS substations and grid connections, focusing on projects from 33kV to 400kV. You will act as a technical authority, mentor junior engineers, and collaborate with clients and stakeholders to ensure designs meet regulatory standards and project goals. Responsibilities
- Lead primary plant design and equipment specifications for new substations, extensions, and upgrades (AIS/GIS) up to 400kV.
- Produce and review technical deliverables, including single-line diagrams (SLDs), layouts, equipment plans, technical specifications, and design calculations.
- Oversee load calculations, short-circuit studies, dynamic force calculations, and cable rating designs.
- Ensure compliance with UK DNO/TO standards (e.g., National Grid, SSEN) and CDM regulations, managing design risks and health and safety considerations.
- Collaborate across disciplines, including civil, structural, and protection and control, to deliver fully integrated solutions.
- Actively develop and maintain relationships with clients, contractors, and suppliers.
- Support project delivery to meet quality, cost, and schedule requirements, including attending client and site meetings.
- Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and coaching to junior engineers.
- Take responsibility for quality assurance and ensure compliance with industry standards and best practices. Key Deliverables
- Substation Primary Plant Design: Develop layouts, plant specifications, and equipment designs for transformers, switchgear, busbars, CTs, VT configurations, and ancillary systems.
- Design Documentation: Deliver technical reports, design intent documents, risk assessments, and tender documentation.
- Site Surveys and Constructability: Perform site visits to assess design feasibility and address constructability issues.
- Interface Management: Coordinate with protection and control, civil/structural and HV cables teams., Work on prestigious high-voltage projects in the UK and globally.

Essential Skills - Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
- Chartered Engineer (or working towards chartership).
- Proven experience in primary plant design for HV/EHV substations (AIS/GIS) up to 400kV.
- Proficiency in producing designs compliant with UK DNO/TO standards.
- Knowledge of dynamic force calculations, earthing design, and plant clearances.
- Expertise in technical specifications for transformers, switchgear, battery systems, and CT/VT selection.
- Demonstrable leadership and mentoring skills, with experience managing multidisciplinary teams. Desirable Skills
- Proficiency in power system analysis software (e.g., DIgSILENT PowerFactory, ETAP).
- Experience with AutoCAD for layout and schematic design.
- Familiarity with European Grid Codes, grid compliance studies, and protection and control interfaces.
- Understanding of CDM 2015 regulations, including fulfilling Principal Designer responsibilities.
- Experience in scripting languages like Python for design automation.
- Previous experience with National Grid / DNO projects.
