Full Job Description

As a Principal Structural Engineer, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. You will be playing a fundamental role within a team of experienced Structural Engineers, overseeing the technical delivery, as well as development and coaching to ensure the team have the necessary skills to support a key customers and stakeholders.

Day-to-day, you'll be responsible for directing technical outputs, coaching junior team members as well as coordinating and working with multi-disciplinary teams and representing Babcock at customer meetings to support a variety of projects.

  • Conducting structural assessment using hand calculations and finite element analysis.

  • Undertaking design and assessment for explosive shock survivability.

  • Attending platform surveys and validation exercises.

  • Generating platform capability upgrades for naval vessels

  • Performing technical investigations and feasibility studies.

  • Developing the team's technical capabilities to ensure capability sustainment.


  • This role is full time, 35 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements with 2 days in the office/onsite and 3 days working from home.

    Essential experience of the Principal Structural Engineer
  • Significant experience in marine structural analysis and design of marine structures knowledge

  • Effective project management, interpersonal and communication skills

  • Proven ability to effectively lead, coach, develop junior members and facilitate transfer of knowledge within the team.

  • Experience in utilising Finite element analysis software

  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to prioritise effectively and deliver in a complex environment as well as positively influence and work collaboratively across the organisation


  • Qualifications for the Principal Structural Engineer
  • Degree qualified in a STEM discipline (or equivalent experience).

  • Has achieved (or can demonstrate the competencies required for) Chartered or Incorporated Engineer Status with the UK Engineering Council and holds full membership of a relevant engineering institute.
