Full Job Description

The Proctors' Office is an independent and discrete body within the University, made up of a permanent secretariat that advises and guides the annually elected Proctors and the Assessor in their work, and has responsibility for student discipline, complaints, and appeals. The two Proctors and the Assessor are senior officers and trustees of the University, each elected by a college, typically from amongst its fellowship, to serve for a 1-year period. They are given considerable powers to act on the University's behalf in matters of central importance to its functioning and its reputation. They have independent and ultimate governance and scrutiny oversight of the entire institution. The post holder will provide security-related services and guidance for University events and ceremonies. Proctors' Officers are required to work unsociable hours (with overtime paid) at short notice. They are expected to work on their own initiative, with minimum supervision, under the direction of the Deputy Marshal/Principal Proctors' Officer. The position is offered full-time on a fixed-term contract until 31 July 2026. About You The Proctors' Office is seeking an enthusiastic, highly motivated and dedicated Proctors' Officer who will co-ordinate and plan security, marshal and supervise on the ground staff and liaise with external agencies such as the police and local authorities. You will carry out duties to support the work of the Proctors' Office and other key offices within the University, investigate non-academic breaches of statues and regulations by students and other matters that fall within the jurisdiction of the University. As a Proctors' Officer you will work in collaboration with partners and stakeholders across the city and beyond. You will have good written and oral communication skills, display maturity and self-discipline, and be keen to help the University provide professional and efficient security-related services. A background in providing security services and experience of working in a supervisory role is desirable but not essential as training can be provided. Additional Security Pre-Employment Checks This role involves duties that require additional security pre-employment checks, including a satisfactory enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check, in preparation for licensing under the Private Security Industry Act 2001.
