Full Job Description

As a member of the support team you will be responsible for undertaking a range of duties commensurate with your specific role within the organisation, this will include and may not be limited to carry out Nursery production work and related sales activity as required under the direction of the Wholesale Nursery Supervisor/Grower, Commercial Nurseries Manager and Head of Horticulture (Curriculum & Commercial). The post holder will be responsible to the Wholesale Nursery Supervisor/Grower., To assist with the day-to-day operation of the production, potting, glasshouse and sales areas.
Undertake nursery production activities as required e.g. potting, spacing, watering, weeding, pruning, labelling, lifting and preparing plants for dispatch etc.
To carry out production activities as are necessary for the production of high- quality nursery stock and other protected crops.
To monitor and maintain the quality of nursery stock and protected crops produced in conjunction with other members of the nursery team and report on any issues noticed. To assist in the organisation and operation of sales activities e.g. shows and sales days, along with attendance at promotional events as necessary (including weekends).
To assist with weekend watering on a rota with other staff (if these fall outside of their normal working hours, staff will be entitled to time off in lieu).
To assist with sales activities such as answering customer enquiries, serving customers or answering the phone in busy periods or at times of staff absence.
Application of biological controls, fertilisers, bio-stimulants, fertilisers and sprays to crops and the wider site as necessary.
To be responsible for personal health and safety, and that of others in compliance with legislation and the college codes of practice.
To make best use of machinery and equipment and to operate equipment safely.

In order to support during busy exam periods, you may be asked to undertake exam invigilator duties. The College will provide training.

OFFERS OF WORK

For the successful candidate a conditional offer of work will be made. Our offer of work will be conditional upon a number of mandatory pre-employment checks, to include but not limited to: DBS, Barred List check, right to work check, internet search, TRA check (academic posts).

Any offers of appointment will be subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check (formerly CRB), a certificate of good conduct if applicable, plus receipt of satisfactory references, Occupational Health clearance, an understanding of safeguarding and qualifications verification. An Enhanced DBS check is required for this position as you will be working within 'Regulated Activity' within a specific place (i.e. the College).

This role is classed as working within Regulated Activity. It is an offence to apply for this role if you are barred from engaging in regulated activity relevant to children. By applying for this position, you agree to an Enhanced DBS check in line with DBS regulations.,

  • A Level 2 qualification in a horticulture related subject area or studying towards this.

  • Ability to maintain a well prepared, safe working environment and develop the professional attitude staff towards their work and give them every opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills.

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Knowledge of Health and Safety procedures and their implementation including an understanding of Health and Safety law and policies.
