Full Job Description

The Trauma Service at the John Radcliffe Hospital runs a 'consultant of the week' model of patient care delivery reflecting its major commitment to emergency work. For each 24 hour period there is a designated on-call team which is Consultant led. Fellows, Specialty Registrars and F2 doctors work shifts in a team structure. Following an x-ray conference and hand over ward round, the night team are off duty the following day. Two further consultants are committed to running the two daily operating sessions while a fourth consultant will run daily clinics or ward rounds. Trainees are committed to support these operating lists and clinics. There are specialist clinics for children's fractures, pelvic injuries, polytrauma/rehab and post trauma reconstruction.

  • Full GMC registration and licence to practise
  • Completion of recognised specialist training in Trauma and Orthopaedics or equivalent
  • Completed AO Advanced Principles of Fracture management
  • Hold FRCS (Tr & Orth) or equivalent
  • 12 months experience in Registrar /resident level post in an MTC / level 1 trauma centre.
  • The ability to run an unfiltered Major Trauma Take.
  • The ability to plan complex surgical procedures with awareness of current evidence base.
  • The ability to organise and plan a surgical list involving complex injures.
  • Desirable criteria
  • MSc / PhD in related field.
  • Experience and evidence of Audit, quality Improvement and Service Development
  • Formal qualifications in teaching and education
  • Teaching experience to both under and post-graduate level.
  • Ability to identify research questions, design, execute and publish research projects in the field of orthopaedic trauma.
  • Experience of delivering service development / quality improvement projects, Completion of basic surgical training
  • Completed MBBS, MRCS or equivalent
  • ATLS Provider, Essential criteria
  • Core surgical training programme - or equivalent
  • Ability to function at Registrar level
  • Desirable criteria
  • Experience in Registrar level in Trauma and Orthopaedic, Team working
  • Communication skills
  • Organisation, You must have appropriate UK professional registration.

Post-CCT applications are invited for the prestigious Oxford Trueta Orthopaedic Trauma Fellowship program. We have positions available starting in February 2026 and August 2026. Candidates are asked to express a preference for a particular start date in their application form. https://www.ouh.nhs.uk/services/departments/general-surgery/trauma/trueta/ These 12-month posts are for post-CCT level candidates only who wish to specialise in Orthopaedic Trauma and intend to work in a major trauma or level one trauma centre. The successful candidates will be based at the Trauma Unit is the heart of the John Radcliffe Hospital Major Trauma Centre. Each of our two fellows spend 9.5 PAs per week in one of our two daily trauma lists and one outpatient clinic sessions per fortnight. An SPA session per week is also allocated for administration, development, research and audit.
