Whether it's sending probes into space or finding new ways to treat cancer, everyone here plays a vital role in making a positive difference to society., This newly created role will support the team in running and expanding our Incubation Programmes. The role will be based at either the Harwell Campus or Sci-tech Daresbury, both of which have established incubation programmes teams. While the post will be based at one of these two locations, there will be a requirement to travel to, and work at, all three sites from time to time, (Daresbury, Harwell and Edinburgh).

The Business Incubation Programmes Senior Associate will be a key member of the Incubation Programmes team. The role is a development role with the intention that post holders could develop into Programme Managers. The post holder will work primarily with the Programmes Manager team to support the delivery of the Incubation Programmes, but also with the Operations team.

The main duties of this role are to support the Programme Managers in the growth of STFC's Incubation Programmes.,

  • Support the Programme Managers in ensuring a high-quality flow of applications to the Business Incubation Programmes by identifying potential applicants (i.e. start-ups) and supporting them in the application process.

  • Support the Programme Managers in ensuring start-ups incubated in the Programmes complete their incubation plans and fully exploit the technical and business support they are offered during their incubation.

  • Act as a contact for incubated start-ups for matters relating to the business incubation programmes.

  • Generate a regular flow of high-quality content (case studies, blogs, position papers) to support the marketing and promotion of the Business Incubation Programmes.

  • Undertake horizon scanning of technology and investment trends in relevant deeptech areas.

  • Plan, organise and run events in support of Business Incubation Programmes' goals.

  • Represent Business Incubation Programmes at relevant industry events - trade shows, conferences etc.

  • Essential:
  • A demonstrable interest in advanced technology, commercialisation of technology and supporting start-ups and scale-ups. (S&I)

  • Experience in supporting business development activities, e.g., conducting market research, developing sales plans, reviewing sales funnels, developing marketing activities, etc. (S&I)

  • Ability to create high-quality content for external marketing and/or internal reporting, in response to an outline brief. (S&I)

  • An ability to lead and take a proactive approach to delivering discrete projects with high-level briefing and guidance. (I)

  • Good organisational skills including the ability to manage multiple activities, prioritise and meet deadlines, and to engage colleagues and managers where relevant. (S&I)

  • Excellent communication (oral and written), networking and presentation skills, including the ability to interface between technical and commercial audiences, and to communicate with individuals at all levels of seniority. (S&I)

  • The curiosity and attitude to deliver continuous improvement i.e. to do the job well and plan to do it better. (S&I)

  • Ability to occasionally travel and work at different locations and travel within the UK. (S&I)

  • Proficiency in using IT systems, web-based tools and Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Outlook. (S&I)


  • Desirable:
  • Experience of working within a start-up or scale-up support programme (e.g., an incubator or accelerator programme), a start-up or in a public sector grant scheme.

    STFC supports UK technology start-ups and SMEs through several Business Incubation activities.


  • Our Business Incubation Programmes supports UK technology start-ups to build a new product or service and start selling it commercially. The programmes provide support for start-ups over the course of 1-2 years, providing grant funding, commercial coaching and access to technical expertise and facilities at STFC and other public sector organisations. We have a thirteen-year record of success in running these programmes and have supported over 140 UK start-ups and the creation of over 1,000 highly-skilled jobs.

    STFC runs six Incubation Programmes, each focused on one technology area (Space, Biotech, Quantum, Digital, Health tech and Applied Physics). These programmes operate across three UK sites in Harwell (Oxfordshire), Daresbury (Cheshire) and Edinburgh.
