Full Job Description

We are looking for a proactive and skilled communications and engagement professional to support the Programme, ensuring that both current and potential building users are at the heart of our thinking, while also building broad support and advocacy for our plans. The ideal candidate will have demonstrable experience of working on major capital projects. You will coordinate and deliver communications and engagement, targeting the public, staff, media and stakeholders with timely, accurate and high-quality content and activities. You will also provide communications advice and guidance to the project team and Barbican leadership, helping to identify and mitigate potential risks. The phased nature of the Programme means that from day one you will be working on the delivery of some projects (supporting on-the-ground building works) while also contributing the planning stages of others, including consultation and fundraising activities. The role reports to the Community Engagement and Communications Manager, and will also include some tasks assisting them with the Barbican's wider work to engage with our neighbourhood community across the full breadth of our activities beyond the Renewal Programme., As part of our commitment to increasing the diversity of staff within the Barbican we are particularly keen to encourage applications from people from groups that are currently underrepresented, including people from the Global Majority

  • and deaf and disabled people. We want to better reflect and understand the communities we exist to serve. We are members of the Disability Confident Scheme and guarantee to interview all disabled candidates who would like to be considered under this scheme and who meet the minimum essential criteria for the role. Please contact us if you require reasonable adjustments as part of the application process.
  • Global Majority is a collective term that refers to people who are Black, Asian, Brown, dual-heritage, indigenous to the global south, and or, have been racialised as 'ethnic minorities'

The Barbican is an international arts, conference, and education centre in the heart of the City of London. We are London's Creative Catalyst for arts, curiosity, and enterprise. Across our theatres, concert halls, cinemas, galleries, business venues and public and community spaces, we spark creative possibilities and transformation for artists, audiences, and communities - to inspire, connect and provoke debate. We are the place to be and a place where everyone is welcome. Our impact is felt far outside our walls and ripples beyond the experiences we offer - locally, nationally, and internationally.
  • In 2021, we launched the Barbican Renewal Programme, a once-in-a-generation opportunity to radically reimagine what an arts centre can be. Through it, we'll unlock the potential of this area of the Square Mile for generations to come. At forty years, our building is showing its age, and needs investment so our spaces can meet the expectations of audiences and artists for the next forty and beyond. Our goal is to care for the things people love about the Barbican, while delivering improved public and creative spaces and facilities. We're working with an award-winning design team to deliver a sustainable development that will bring underused spaces into new creative use, all without adding a single square metre of extra building.
