Full Job Description

This project manager will report to the Senior project manager and will work within network operations based in our Kings Lynn office, overseeing works across Peterborough, Norwich, and Bury St Edmunds. You will be a permanent employee in our UK Power Networks team.,

  • The role of the Project Manager in the Distribution Capital Delivery team is to project manage construction assurance on a portfolio of projects and work programmes from inception to completion.
  • The Project Manager in the Distribution Capital Delivery team also has to ensure that all projects are undertaken. The Project Manager must promote the UK Power Networks Stay Safe Currencies and work toward zero lost time injuries.
  • The project manager agrees and implements the project delivery strategy which may be through UK Power Networks staff within the Network Operations directorate, Powercare or via approved contractors.
  • You will forecast resource and material requirements, monitor project costs and delivery, manage contractor performance and provide regular reports.
  • The role also includes liaison with Asset Management, Distribution Planning, Procurement, and Supply Chain.
  • The Team The Distribution Capital Delivery team delivers the RIIO-ED2 settlement through the Asset Portfolio Plan for the three license areas, with a team based in each region. As part of this team the Project Manager will deliver a portfolio of projects spread across several areas within the Asset Portfolio Plan and activities related to delivering the Asset Portfolio Plan at a distribution level. The value of the portfolio will vary depending on the content but will be in the order of £2m - £10m per annum with multiple low/medium value projects plus also a few large value schemes circa £300k. The portfolio will include the management and assurance of contractors including Networks term contractors and framework contractors engaged for specific activities. Principal Accountabilities:
  • Deliver projects/portfolio of projects from inception to completion to time, quality, cost maintaining the highest levels of safety and environmental management
  • Undertake construction assurance through site safety audits on quality of work, technical competencies, adherence to specifications, compliance with testing and commissioning procedures and safety and environmental procedures. Ensure that the required project completion data is compliant with policy and submitted within specified timescales for processing
  • Produce delivery plans and ensure provision of direct/contract resources, materials and services to ensure that project programmes are maintained
  • Manage commercial arrangements with contractors to ensure that contractual arrangements are met and that cost controls are in place
  • Provide monthly reports including achievement, costs and forecasts
  • Communicate with partners such as Distribution Planning, Supply Chain, Customer Operations, Procurement and Contract management to ensure that projects are managed from inception to completion
  • Ensure that all work is carried out to provide very high levels of Customer Service e.g. minimise CI's & CML's
  • Ensure that all workers engaged on the projects/portfolio of projects are aware of all safety and environmental requirements, The Project Manager will ensure that key functions of the project delivery are in place. These include scopes of work, procurement processes, financial approval, resource planning (materials and people), project delivery, reporting and review.
  • The Project Manager role may have a portfolio that is Asset Portfolio Plan specific or covers a range of the Asset Portfolio Plan. In addition, the delivery of this portfolio may be by colleagues in Network Operations or by contractors or in some cases a combination of both. The Project Manager will report to the Senior Project Manager and will work within Eastern Region South Area, although there may be some requirement to work across regions depending on the type of work being managed. The Project Manager will have a, but is required to support the overall team requirements and may therefore have priorities reassigned by the Senior Project Manager. The Project Manager's role is about achieving the requirements of the portfolio and thus the Asset Portfolio Plan in a safe, efficient and cost-effective way. You will require financial management of the projects/portfolio to ensure value for money and that data used in the development of the Asset Portfolio Plan is updated. Health & Safety Responsibilities Managers and supervisors carry both legal and company responsibilities for ensuring the health and safety of their employees, those under their control and those who might be affected by the work undertaken, i.e. public, visitors and employees of other organisations. This includes briefing individuals working for them and ensuring there is the necessary understanding, competence and application of requirements to work safely and without harming the environment. Employees will ensure they understand the health and safety risks involved in their work activities and their responsibility to apply the controls needed to manage those risks to acceptable levels. Similarly where work activities can have an adverse impact upon the environment, and where there are legal requirements, employees will understand those impacts and the controls they must ensure are applied. Employees need to be aware that for some craft and operational roles that work at height, or use fall arrest devices, there is an upper weight limit of 116Kg due to maximum safe working load of the safety equipment that is used.

  • A ONC or equivalent qualification is required for Band E
  • A HNC or equivalent qualification is required for Band D
  • A safety qualification such as IOSH Managing Safely
  • Experience working with the CDM regulations and ISO9001 quality processes
  • NRSWA Supervisors Course (Units 1,10,11)
  • Current valid driving licence
  • Good organisational and communication skills
  • Desired:
  • A formal Project Management qualification such as APMP or Prince 2 (Foundation & Practitioner) will be required for Band D.
  • Authorised Person (11kV Switch OH and/or UG Systems) or Senior Authorised Person (11kV OH and/or UG Systems)
  • Authorised - LV Switching.
  • Construction Skills - Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS).
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Project, the Microsoft Office suite of applications (Excel, word and access) and project management techniques would be an advantage.
  • A working knowledge of SAP including (Project Management, Works management, Finance and Asset Management modules) or experience with a similar Enterprise Management IT system would also be advantageous.
  • Experience of working on electrical distribution networks.
  • (Candidates not meeting the above requirements, but willing to undertake a development plan will also be considered for the position.)
