Full Job Description

We're well known for the wonderful buildings and monuments in our care but we also manage thousands of acres of beautiful open countryside, farm land and paths in urban, rural and coastal locations. We're committed to improving these open sites, making them as welcoming and accessible to as many visitors as possible. Instrumental to this is learning visitor patterns and their needs. We have a small project team working to design, pilot and implement new way of counting visitors to our outdoor spaces and understanding their needs. The team have created a model to predict visitor numbers and now need to test it at a range of properties with large, open sites. This is where you come in. As the Project Support you will help the Project Manager and Senior Project Manager deploy the model and monitor its effectiveness across multiple pilot sites. What it's like to work here You'll report to the Outdoor Visits and Visitors Project Manager within the Data team. You will work with a diverse range of property and visitor experience experts, both centrally and regionally. As this is a national role, there is flexibility on your contractual place of work. Our hybrid working policy means you can balance office and home working with site visits and meetings at other National Trust places. We'll talk about this in more detail at interview, but you should expect to be at a National Trust site for 40-60% of your working week. Frequent national travel is required to the pilot locations so a full driving licence and a willingness to spend occasional nights away from home are essential. This role is offered initially as a 12 month Fixed Term Contract but may be extended by up to a further 24 months if the pilots are successful. What you'll be doing You'll be helping the Project Manager deliver a successful feasibility studies into outdoor visitor numbers, experiences and needs. You will help select the National Trust properties where these pilots will be based and engage with the property and Visitor Experience teams in these locations to build strong and trusting relationships. You'll undertake site-surveys to determine the best locations for counting people, liaise with 3rd party vendors, train local teams, monitor data quality and take proactive corrective action if needed. You may deputise for the Project Manager at meetings with senior managers and 3rd party vendors. You'll be the key point of contact for new sites wanting to participate in the pilots. The post-holder will assist the Project Manager in budget monitoring and forecasting, delivery planning, creating business cases and making improvements to the quality and efficiency of the project.

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual with a passion for the value the outdoors can bring to individuals and communities. We will shortlist against the following criteria:

  • A relationship-builder who inspires trust and confidence. Credible appreciation of the operational challenges faced by local sites. A full driving licence and willingness to spend nights away from home. A confident communicator to a wide range of audiences. A proactive problem solver who can think on their feet. Knowledge of project management process and practices both waterfall and Agile.

The National Trust is committed to promoting and preserving those places of natural beauty and historic interest for which it has the privilege to be responsible for the benefit of the nation, for everyone for ever.
  • The Trust is proud of what has been achieved over the last 126 years and is determined to maintain those high standards of conservation, stewardship and curatorial care for which it has been recognised throughout the world. Its achievements have enabled the general public and the Trust's members and visitors to enjoy and appreciate the countryside, coastline, gardens, historic buildings and collections, all of which encapsulate so much of the history of England, Wales and Northern Ireland. There is a duty to tell that history in a complete, balanced and accurate way, and without judgement.
