Full Job Description

Reporting to the Head of Public Engagement with Science, the Public Engagement Manager will be based in the Public Engagement with Science team, within the Communications and Public Engagement Directorate. The post-holder will line manage two Public Engagement Officers and work closely with other members of the Public Engagement and Communications team, Front of House teams, colleagues from partner organisations, local stakeholders and community organisations, and external professional advisors where appropriate. This role is an excellent opportunity for an experienced public engagement professional with a track record of connecting diverse audiences with science. The successful candidate will be highly motivated, strategic, and creative with a commitment to the principles and practice of equality, diversity and inclusion. Working days are Monday through Friday, with the occasional requirement to work evenings or weekends to support the wider team. Any additional hours worked will be agreed in advance and time booked off in lieu as compensation. Responsibilities of our Public Engagement Manager: Managing the public programme

  • Take forward the creative and strategic development and delivery of the Crick s public events programme which seeks to engage diverse audiences with Crick science, with a particular focus on facilitating dialogue between Crick researchers and public audiences.
  • Oversee the project management of the public programme, working with the Public Engagement Officers to deliver a programme of regular events that engage public audiences with Crick science, including repeat formats, creative events that form part of a wider thematic season, and events responding to new scientific developments.
  • Embedding a culture of engagement
  • Manage a coordinated approach to embed public engagement throughout the institute; raising awareness, building capacity and skills, and supporting participation.
  • Manage and deliver a comprehensive public engagement training offer open to all Crick staff to build understanding, skills, and confidence.
  • Operational and line management
  • Line manage two Public Engagement Officers.
  • Manage the live events and training budget, maintaining a programme that makes best use of the resources available.

    Extensive experience working in public engagement, preferably within a science engagement context.
  • A comprehensive knowledge of good practice in the field of public engagement with science and of how to translate cutting edge science into innovative and inclusive programming.
  • Experience of working closely with scientists or academics to develop and deliver engaging content for diverse audiences.
  • Experience of developing engagement programmes for a broad range of audiences, including adults, families, community groups, and young people.
  • A comprehensive knowledge of event management, with significant project management experience, including experience of developing, implementing and evaluating live events which involve multiple partners and stakeholders.
  • Experience of developing and delivering public engagement training for researchers, and an understanding of the common barriers to engagement and how to overcome them.
  • Strong facilitation skills, with experience facilitating meetings, workshops, and/or conversations between individuals or groups with different levels of knowledge and confidence.
  • An appreciation of the wider social and ethical context of biomedical research.
  • Budget management experience.
