Full Job Description

The role of an imaging assistant is a clinical role; they provide support to a variety of staff groups including consultant radiologists, sonographers and radiographers across all imaging modalities.

Duties involve assisting with minor sterile procedures, chaperoning, coordinating patient lists and preparing patients for their examinations.

Our imaging assistants are required to provide support for the extended working week, therefore a commitment to work evenings and weekends is expected as part of core hours or as additional out of hours.

For full details about this varied and rewarding role, please see attached job description, but some of the responsibilities include

  • Assist Radiology Consultants and other Radiology staff groups with clinical tasks within the various Imaging modalities.

  • Communicate in a concise and appropriate manner, complex information regarding procedures to other hospital staff, patients and relatives.

  • Ensure the smooth running of planned and unscheduled lists.Appropriately preparing patients in advance of their examination.

  • Actively manage and co-ordinate the patient workload.

  • Contacting GP surgeries to request blood test results and alerting relevant staff to any potential anomalies to ensure a patients examination is safe to proceed.

  • Prepare patients for their procedure by providing personal care and providing reassurance to the patient to overcome any patient concerns, in order to obtain the level of cooperation required to achieve a successful outcome to procedures.

  • Assisting with minor sterile procedures, including checking of blood results prior to the procedure, participating in WHO checklists and ensuring all samples are labelled and processed correctly, prior to being taken to the laboratory.

  • Complete MRI safety questionnaires with patients and alert the radiographers prior to the scan if there are any concerns that could compromise patient safety.

  • Prepare patients prior to CT examinations by giving them contrast drinks, assisting with changing if required.

  • Taking basic patient observations before, during and after interventional procedures and alert radiology staff with any anomaly or concern. If instructed call the crash team.

  • Undertake the removal of cannula's from patients when required. (appropriate training will be given)

  • Assist radiologists and radiographers during administration of contrast agents and radiopharmaceuticals or interventional procedures by laying out biopsy/ drainage trays and trolleys using aseptic technique. Clearing away items used during these procedures which may include sharps or items soiled with bodily fluids.

    An exciting opportunity has arisen for enthusiastic, reliable and highly motivated individuals to join our busy Radiology department at Mid and South Essex University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, as a Band 3 imaging assistant.


  • The role requires rotation through different area's of the department including CT, Ultrasound and MRI. You will also be required to rotate through our outlying Community Hospitals from time to time.

    It is essential the successful candidate enjoys working with people and has a genuine interest in patient care. You must have excellent communication skills, work well as part of a team, but also have the ability to use your initiative and work individually. On the job training will be provided.
