Full Job Description

The role of the nurse in Nuclear Medicine is to prepare patients for their investigations and scans and to carry out various blood sampling procedures involving radio-active isotopes.

In-house training is undertaken, to become a Nuclear Medicine Operator (staff member qualified to administer radio-pharmaceuticals) There are many policies and procedures to learn before the competence and confidence is acquired to be an Operator. Final assessment is made by the ARSAC (Administration of Radioactive Substances Advisory Committee) holder.

A certificate is given, authorizing that the operator may "administer radiopharmaceuticals for radionuclide procedures in accordance with written guidelines in use in the department of Nuclear Medicine".

A certificate is re-issued every 2 years, as the operator is re-assessed on their drawing-up and their injection technique.

Nursing in Nuclear Medicine requires the nurse to have dexterity and accuracy to be able to inject the patient with an intravenous radio-isotope, and also cannulation skills.

Administration of isotopes is the "bread and butter" of the Nuclear Medicine nurse, and the morning work is employed in doing just that.

You are likely to be the first person the patient will see, and so it's important to be welcoming and attentive. Just coming to a department with "Nuclear" in the name causes fear in many of our patients, so we need to be aware of how patients are feeling and reassure them accordingly

Main duties of the job

Are you interested in Radioactivity and how it is used for Diagnostic Imaging and therapy procedures? Come and join our small and friendly team of nurses in providing top quality care for patients undergoing a range of investigative procedures and therapies in the Department of Nuclear Medicine.
