Full Job Description

We are seeking applications for a Research Associate to join us to work on the project Developing Corpus Approaches to Safeguarding and Family Justice System Research, funded by an Economic and Social Research Council Grant, ref ES/Y002709/1, led by Professor Lauren Devine.

The research seeks to understand and contribute to the knowledge base in various contemporary areas of safeguarding by building and analysing corpora of legal, policy, practice and user-focussed documents and online materials. Areas of investigation include (1) comparative global safeguarding models (2) children's online safety (3) risk quantification, and (4) access to justice. Our main purpose is to contribute to policy and practice recommendations to improve safeguarding services, and outcomes for vulnerable families.

The research associate will be responsible for data collection, cataloguing, and preparation of large corpora with some analysis. The role is suitable for a post-doctoral corpus linguist with experience in building specialised corpora. The post includes report writing, development of toolkits and policy recommendations. The successful candidate will work closely with the other members of the project team and doctoral students.

The position is available initially for one year with the possibility of extension, subject to external funding. Part time, flexible and job share arrangements would be considered where possible.

The successful candidate will have a doctorate in corpus linguistics or a related discipline and will have effective communication, organisational and team working skills. You will have an interest in social justice, safeguarding (broadly defined) and working with legal materials. You will also have experience in compiling, analysing, and maintaining/expanding large specialised corpora, including harvesting of written data from online and offline sources. The successful candidate will demonstrate advanced corpus literacy and proficiency in using common corpus analysis software and tools, as well as a profound understanding of qualitative and quantitative corpus linguistics research methods.
