Full Job Description

This is an exciting opportunity for a Research Fellow (2 years' fixed term and full-time £34,866 - £45,163 per annum) to be part of an Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC) project at the University of Warwick Law School (WLS).

The project, "Open Constitutional Democracy: Reconciling Deliberation and Constitutional Democracy", is a multi-institution project, as part of the Trans-Atlantic Platform call on Democracy, Governance and Trust, involving collaboration among teams in the UK (led by Dr David Vitale, Associate Professor, WLS), Switzerland (led by Dr Odile Ammann, Associate Professor, University of Lausanne) and Canada (led by Dr Michael Pal, Associate Professor, University of Ottawa). The project is co-funded by the ESRC, the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).

The project aims to deepen understanding of the opportunities and challenges associated with theories of deliberative democracy, and more specifically with the theory of open democracy. It aims to interrogate the constitutional, legal and institutional dimensions of this democratic theory to determine its capacity to serve as a model for future reforms. In doing so, the project seeks to propose a revised, trust-based version of open democracy, integrating citizen participation while preserving institutions to guarantee rights and effective governance.

We anticipate holding interviews the week commencing 13 January 2025, with a potential start date of 1 April 2025, or shortly thereafter (to be negotiated with the successful candidate, depending on their circumstances).
