Full Job Description

This fixed term post (36.5 hours per week) will commence as soon as possible with a latest start on 01 February 2025 until 31 July 2025.

You will undertake analytical research on an EPSRC funded project entitled "Enhancing Indonesia's Disaster Preparedness Through an Innovative Multi-Risk Management Framework with ICT ecosystems". This is an interdisciplinary research project which includes activities at the University of Warwick in the UK, and collaboration with Universitas Bung Hatta (UBH) and Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), in Indonesia. The overarching aim is to develop an innovative, rapid and efficient framework for multi-hazard seismic risk assessment with ICT ecosystems to enhance West Sumatra's disaster preparedness, using Padang city as a pilot case study.

This post in the School of Engineering will focus on the development of vulnerability/fragility curves for substandard masonry and reinforced concrete buildings, working in the Civil Engineering Stream under the supervision of Dr Reyes Garcia. You will have expertise in earthquake and structural engineering and will model and assess the behaviour of existing structures typical of developing countries. You will assess the nonlinear behaviour of buildings using finite element software, as well as the effect of different strengthening methods (e.g metal straps, FRP jackets, steel/concrete jacketing, and shear walls) on the building behaviour. You will assist with the incorporation of the developed curves into the new seismic risk assessment framework with ICT ecosystems.

The project includes the use of AI/ML learning algorithms and mobile apps to assess the vulnerability of buildings using images, so candidates with a background in those fields are particularly encouraged to apply. We are also interested in exploring the use of other strengthening methods or assessment techniques in this project. You will be expected to work along other members of the project team, who have expertise in AI/ML and seismic risk assessment.

This post is based at the University of Warwick and requires a commitment for regular on-site work. You will be required to meet the project partners at Bandung at the end of the project, so the willingness to travel to Indonesia is required. You will be expected to write up your research for publication and work with project partners to produce joint reports and publications. You will be expected to assist with any management/administration problems that may arise from the project and produce and present regular project reports ensuring that the project objectives and deadlines are met.
