• To develop the fundamentals of basic science research underpinning anaesthesia research.
• To gain appropriate skills to undertake basic science research independently, with supervision from academic clinicians and scientists.
• To promote anaesthesia related activity across the Trust and seek collaborations with scientists and health professionals from other disciplines.
• To provide high quality elective and emergency anaesthesia within a one-to-one consultant supervised environment initially, and then go on to manage cases within the tertiary trauma and vascular centre with indirect supervision.
• To gain specialist tertiary anaesthetic experience within the theatres which includes major complex trauma, vascular (open and endovascular), plastics, orthotrauma and bariatric services.
• To actively engage in the relevant teaching and training of other members of the anaesthetic department and hospital staff.
• Engage in quality improvement activity, additional management and administrative tasks as deemed appropriate to the position.
• The post holder will also have an NHS service commitment of approximately 1 elective list per week and to the anaesthetic on call rota, a 1 in 8 full shift pattern, as the senior registrar on call. This covers emergency theatre work, anaesthetic requirements for trauma calls at the Major Trauma Centre and overseeing anaesthetic care of the obstetric anaesthetic registrar. Emergency theatres include specialities for general surgery, vascular, orthopaedics, gynaecology and orthoplastics as well as the occasional medical emergency. They will participate as a trauma team member at trauma calls when on duty.
  
  At the end of the fellowship, the successful candidate will have gained the necessary experience to pursue their research interest as an independent investigator and, although not a required outcome, it will provide them with a platform to undertake a higher degree in biomedical, physiology and clinical research. Expected output would be a publication in a peer reviewed journal or poster at an international conference.
  
  Applications are invited for an Anaesthesia Research Fellow post, to work within the Department of Anaesthetics at St Mary's Hospital and the MSk Lab at Imperial College London to commence from August 2025. The post is for 1 year. St Mary's Hospital is part of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. It has a strong commitment to teaching and to translational research.
The post is aimed at senior anaesthetic residents who wish to pursue an interest in anaesthesia research. It is intended to provide the applicant with the fundamental skills and training in basic science research, with support provided for doctoral applications for a career in Academic Anaesthesia. This post could be considered as an OOPE or a standalone 12-month post. The successful applicantwill be offered approximately 4 days per week protected research time and a mix of clinical training and service in anaesthesia at St. Mary's Hospital. This is one of four major trauma centres in London, offering adult and paediatric tertiary services in vascular, plastic, neurosurgery and orthotrauma. On call is expected to be 1:8 although some flexibility is required. The post will be developed according to the successful candidate's interests and requirements. Applicants should be eligible for registration with the GMC and have an appropriate anaesthetic qualification. It would suit a senior trainee/ peri-CCT grade as independent practice will an expected, thus more junior grades are not eligible. The role will enhance anaesthesia related research activity at St Mary's Hospital, as well as contribute to the department of anaesthesia, which is part of a trust that is a well-established world leader in academic and clinical research. The fellow will have approximately 4 days per week protected research time. This time will be spent working in either the MSk lab or the wider Anaesthesia, Pain Medicine, Intensive Care (APMIC) faculty at Imperial College London, depending on the available research project of interest to the candidate. The project will be in the biomedical and physiology research fields with relevance to Anaesthesia.
