Full Job Description

A retinal graders main duty is the grading and assessment of retinal images and identifying those that require priority grading, applying appropriate action and management to the individual's screening episode. You will need to be able to follow strict criteria, and work within programme standard operating procedures and guidelines. Undertaking additional duties will also be required, such as dealing with queries, referring participants to secondary care and interpreting feedback after referral. A good level of administrative ability and computer literacy will be required
You may need to engage with DESW participants, responding to queries and explaining screening results. Liaising with other departments within the organisation, service clinicians and communicating with secondary care contacts is required.
You will be expected to undergo regular training sessions and be able to comply with policies and procedures for the programme and for PHW, such as participant confidentiality and data security.
You will also actively take part in internal and external quality assurance processes and maintain or exceed agreed competency levels.

Diabetic Eye Screening Wales works as part of the Health Protection and Screening Division in Public Health Wales, the successful applicant will be expected to work as part of a team driven by the PHW organisational values and working together to achieve a healthier future for Wales. Our aim is to reduce the risk of avoidable sight loss for people living with diabetes. This is achieved by early detection and referral to Hospital Eye Services (secondary care) for timely management of sight threatening diabetic retinopathy and maculopathy, should it be detected., DESW is undergoing continual improvement and adaptation to meet the demands of a busy screening programme, and is reviewing new ways of working. Currently the role is office-based.

Hours worked will be on a rota basis between 07:00 and 20:00, occasionally weekend working will be required.

To support our all Wales service, we particularly welcome applications from Welsh speakers., Diabetic Eye Screening Wales (DESW) are seeking an enthusiastic and committed full time retinal grader to join our busy grading team based at Treforest, South Wales.
You will be responsible for assessing retinal images and identifying the presence and severity of diabetic eye disease (diabetic retinopathy). This is a specialised role, using dedicated software to examine the photographic image in detail. This will require high levels of concentration and review, and extended periods of time using display screen equipment.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply., We would like you to be a team player and be able to show concentration and dedication to the role. Previous experience of grading is not required, as full training will be provided. In addition, we will support you to complete an accredited level 4 Diploma in Diabetic Eye Grading (Agored Cymru) which is a requirement for the role.

Please be advised that there is a temporary top up for Bands 1,2 and 3 to reflect the incorporation of the top up to the living wage of £12 per hour - £23,465 per annum. This temporary top up will be in place until the annual pay uplift for 2024/25 is confirmed., To work in the UK, all candidates who are not UK or Republic of Ireland (RoI) nationals require sponsorship to obtain either a Health and Care visa or Skilled Worker visa, unless you have permission to work via another route. The salary scale shown is for a full-time member of staff, with the amount being adjusted pro rata for those working less than 37.5 hours per week.
In general, anyone joining our Trust who has not previously worked in the NHS will, by default, start on the first point of the advertised pay band. Pay progression will then be determined by annual Performance and Development Reviews in accordance with the NHS Wales Pay Progression Policy. An application for Incremental Credit may be considered, but can only be awarded based on evidenced, reckonable service and/or equivalent, relevant experience.
