Full Job Description

This is a key post within the Strategic Planning & Performance Unit supporting the implementation of City's Vision and Strategy 2030. Risk management operates across the University and is central to the achievement of objectives and well-informed decision-making, whether at strategic, operational, School or project level. The University is committed to ensuring that it has a robust and comprehensive system of risk management and follows good practice in risk management. Business continuity refers to an organization's ability to maintain essential functions during and after a disruption. It involves planning and preparing for potential risks that could interrupt normal business operations, ensuring that the organization can continue operating, recover quickly, and minimize damage. Following the merger as City St George's, there is prompt work required to develop an effective approach to risk management and business continuity across three campuses. This role reports to the Director of Strategy, Planning and Performance, this role requires an individual with a good understanding of the strategic challenges across the sector, a keen attention to detail and high-level influencing skills. The Risk and Business Continuity Manager is a high-profile role, working with senior colleagues across the University. The role requires an individual who can build effective relationships with senior colleagues across the University. The role-holder will be responsible for delivering reports, analysis and papers for senior governance groups, including Council, Audit and Risk Committee and the Senior Leadership Team. Risk Management The specific responsibilities of the role-holder for Risk management include:

  • Strategic Risk Register: The role-holder will be the principal owner of the University Strategic Risk Register, working with SLT colleagues to manage, update and align risks. The role-holder will also be expected to work with owners of the strategic risk registers across schools and professional services.
  • Reporting writing and presenting: The roie-holder will work with the Director of Strategy, Planning and Performance, to develop (and sometimes deliver) papers relating to risk management at all appropriate meetings and groups. These include Audit and Risk Committee and the Senior Leadership Team.
  • Risk policy and culture: The role-holder will be the owner of the Risk Policy. This policy should be well understood and used by all colleagues who have risk management within their remit. This policy, and broader engagement, should support a focus on a unified culture for risk management across the campuses.
  • 4Risk: The University uses the 4Risk platform, a modern and easy-to-use risk management platform. The role-holder will be expected to lead on the transition of the use of 4Risk with two specific objectives: 1) To roll-out the platform across all campuses, 2) To roll-out the update to the 4Risk platform 2.0.
  • Business Continuity The specific responsibilities of the role-holder for Business Continuity Management (BCM) include:
  • BCM Plan and BCM Steering Group: To be the main point of contact for 'Incident Ready', the University's
  • Silver Group: To act as the 'loggist' for the BCM Silver Group.
  • BCM simulation and training: To lead on the organisation and support the delivery of BCM simulation, alongside external consultants.
  • BCM policy and culture: To lead on updating the BCM policy, and sub-policies across all three campuses. To support this, the role-holder will be required to lead on an engagement plan to inform and unite colleagues around the purpose, principles and details of BCM planning.

    The role-holder is expected to have a good knowledge of the Higher Education landscape.
  • The role-holder is expected to have a good knowledge of risk management, either in the context of HE or elsewhere.
  • The role-holder is expected to have a good knowledge of business continuity management, either in the context of HE or elsewhere., The role-holder should be proficient in MS Office suite, with specific expectations around competency in excel, to support analytical requirements.
  • The role-holder should be competent working with IT platforms, to support the role-holder in being the owner of the 4Risk system.
  • The role-holder should be comfortable working with senior colleagues, including communication in-writing and in person, supporting the responsibilities for organising, convening and facilitating steering groups for risk and business continuity.
  • The role-holder should have a very strong attention to detail, supporting their responsibilities for being a loggist for BCM Silver Group, and across the ownership of the Strategic Risk Register.
  • Experience
  • The role-holder should have experience of writing reports for senior governance groups.
  • The role-holder should have experience of leading on risk management within HE or elsewhere.
  • The role-holder should have experience of working with online platforms to facilitate risk management.
  • The role-holder should have experience of working with senior colleagues.
  • The role-holder should have experience of delivering presentations and papers at senior governance groups.
